    Everyone welcome!

Liberty Sanctuary is a 501 (c)(3) equine sanctuary in Wasatch County which offers freedom for equines rescued from the slaughter pipeline, a vast network responsible for sending mostly adoptable horses to slaughter after enduring documented, consistent abuse and suffering. The sanctuary was inaugurated in 2023 by a group of caring individuals and equine enthusiasts in an effort to save horses from slaughter and to advocate for them. Liberty supports the bi-partisan SAFE Act and also seeks for other safe management of America’s equine population.

    • The American equine is an enduring symbol of freedom
    • American horses have been our partners in developing this great nation and in work and sport
    • They deserve our gratitude & protection
    • Over 20,000 equines were exported for slaughter and sent to foreign markets for human consumption in 2022
    • According to the USDA, 92.3 percent of equines in kill pens are otherwise healthy and could live productive lives
    • Horse slaughter isn’t humane or acceptable
    • Contact your elected officials to help pass the SAFE Act (Save Americas Forgotten Equines) as part of the 2023 Farm Bill)

  • Liberty Sanctuary’s Night of Freedom Fundraiser

Liberty Sanctuary’s Night of Freedom Fundraiser

Join equine enthusiasts, mentors, and other like-minded and caring individuals at Liberty Sanctuary’s NIGHT OF LIBERTY FUNDRAISER Thursday, July 27th at The Lakehouse at Deer Creek. Enjoy great tunes, a delicious meal by Savoury Kitchen, wines by Russian River Vineyards, an exclusive Trunk Show by JW Bennett, and an online auction.

Located right here in our own Heber Valley, Liberty Sanctuary’s mission is to “not only rehabilitate horses and donkeys found in kill pens but to share their stories and create awareness of their plight and unfair circumstances.” The non-profit’s aim is “. . . to advocate and be a voice for slaughter horses by promoting the SAFE Act and those seeking other solutions.”

As we celebrate our freedoms, state, and country during July, what better way to honor one of America’s symbols of Freedom – The American Horse – than to create awareness surrounding the unfathomable treatment of this noble animal? What better time to educate, share, and remind all that it is because of the horse that settlers were able to explore the country, head west, and enjoy progress?

Whether you ride and understand the close bond between humans and equines or you don’t ride or know much about horses but love animals and can relate to life’s challenges – Liberty Sanctuary is for you. “Offering these gracious animals justice matters. Doing the right thing matters. This is the Code of the West.”

  • Arizona Trail 800-mile Showdown

    Arizona Trail 800-mile Showdown

On October 15-27th 2022, both ultra-endurance athletes Ben Light and Mike McKnight will embark on a remarkable challenge. They will each face off and race one other across the Arizona Trail with the goal of breaking the current (supported) Fastest Known Time of 13 days 3 hrs 21 mins. The Arizona Trail is an 800-mile recreation trail that connects Mexico to Utah through mountain ranges, canyons, deserts, wilderness, forests and communities.

To make things more challenging, the duo will not be running together, but will be racing each other – in opposite directions. That’s right. In this first of its kind event, Ben and Mike will race each other but will go opposite directions. One will begin on the Utah border and the other on the Mexico border of Arizona. To determine who will start where, the two have teamed up with Aravaipa Running to do a LIVE coin toss on Monday October 10th at 1pm (Mountain Time). The winner of the coin toss will choose their direction and the loser will choose the starting time.

Ben and Mike are honored to be both taking on this remarkable 800-mile challenge while raising funds in support of two non-profit organizations that serve our local communities. Ben will be raising donations for Bigger Than The Trail and Mike will be raising donations for RODS Heros. Their goal is to raise $25,000 that will be split evenly between the two organizations.

Raffle Giveaway…for every dollar donated, the donor will be given one raffle ticket. Once the project is completed and all donations are received, those who donated will be entered into a Raffle Giveaway that consists of over 50 prizes totaling over $7,500. (One prize per winner)

Here is the official LINK to the LIVE coin toss that will be hosted by Aravapia Running on their YouTube channel. It is scheduled to go LIVE at 1pm (MST) Monday October 10th.

  • Nutcracker Tea Raises Money for Children’s Justice Center

Nutcracker Tea Raises Money for Children’s Justice Center

The Wasatch Dance Center Foundation’s Nutcracker Tea was held December 35 as a fundraiser for the Children’s Justice Center (CJC). The foundation normally puts on several benefit performances of the Nutcracker each December. They brought in $14,500 for the CJC in 2019. This year, the full-length show was unable to be performed because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Instead, the Nutcracker Tea became a bigger, more involved production, with Zermatt Resort donating their Bernese Event Center. The group performed a 35-minute Nutcracker ballet with narration. The Nutcracker Tea also included sweets and a fun Christmas atmosphere for the four performances. Approximately 800 people attended.

Accommodations were made at the event to protect against Covid-19. Tables were spaced apart, and patrons were able to purchase seating for an entire table to keep familiar groups together.

Several sponsors participated in staging the event, including Lee’s, Kneaders, Suss Cookies, and Spin Café, along with many others. “We’re so grateful for the sponsors to be able to make it happen like it did,” said parent volunteer Corine Cook. “The community came through for us and helped us make it pretty awesome. This year’s event raised even more money than usual for the Wasatch County CJC.

The Children’s Justice Center is a child-friendly interviewing facility set aside for abused or otherwise mistreated children. Interviews are recorded and given to law enforcement and child protection workers. Referrals are made for follow-up services. Aid is also considered for those in need of aftercare services.

According to Kenna Jones, Director of the Wasatch County CJC, “It’s just a team effort to help the kids through that process. . . . It’s a one-time thing, where everyone comes to the child, instead of the child going a whole bunch of places to relive the trauma.” Last year, the CJC interviewed about 100 children. Currently this year, about 160 cases have already been processed through the Wasatch County center.

The Children’s Justice Center cancelled their popular gingerbread fundraiser this year. However, in addition to the Nutcracker Tea donations, the center also received a grant from the Heber City CARES funds to help with operating costs for this year.
