Heber and Midways Mayors are implementing a friendly competition to encourage service in the valley.
“We want to make sure that even during this crazy busy time of Christmas we’re all still giving back to our community in one way or another. A suggestion that we have for you today is the Salvation Army,” Mayor Johnson said, “Red kettle campaign,” Mayor Potter added.
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign takes place in front of different stores where bell ringers ask for spare change and other donations to help those in need in the area.
Mayor Potter says they are trying to get as many people as possible to sign up to volunteer.
“Because all of that money goes for urgent needs,” Potter explained. “Like if something happens medically or they can’t pay a mortgage payment. Whatever it is, it’s just for urgent needs and it’s not a long-term solution. But it helps people in a crisis.”
Mayor Johnson shared a memory from her childhood that has inspired her giving during the Red Kettle campaign throughout her life.
“I remember my mom giving us each quarter to put into the red kettle,” Johnson continued. “And I said, ‘mom how much difference is a quarter going to make?’ and she said, ‘well just think if everybody did it’. So that’s always stuck with me. Every time I go by the red kettle and the bell ringers, I always try to throw a little something in there.”
