The New Ideal.

A long time ago, during World War I or maybe even before, there was a dream to have a theater on Heber City’s Main Street. In 1918 the Ideal Theater opened its doors, and for several decades it served as Heber Valley’s center for community entertainment. Fast forward over a hundred years, and the theater is still standing; situated between an auto parts store and an insurance agency. Unfortunately, the theater has sat mostly empty for several years and is largely forgotten - but not for long. Recently, some city residents…

Mushroom Forage

“Once you start to learn even a little about fungi, it feels like you can’t see the world the same again.” Erin Moore, Secretary Mushroom Society of Utah My first mushroom forage happened by accident while studying abroad in Northern Germany. As I hiked through the woods with my host parents on a rainy autumn day, we were attracted off-trail by bright red amanita muscaria, or fly agaric, the fairytale mushrooms with their red, white-spotted caps. Some were as large as dinner plates, and I was enchanted. Later, we happened…

Meet Dr. Tagge.

Otorhinolaryngology. Otorhinolaryngologist. These two words are terms most of us don’t associate with our common everyday vocabulary. However, once you know their meaning, you’ll realize we talk about both quite often, especially if you have kids. On that note: if you’ve seen the animated movie Penguins of Madagascar, trying to pronounce the words may bring a particular scene to mind: Classified, says to Skipper, “This is difficult for me to say.” Skipper interrupts with, “Is it Osteoporosis? You’ve just got to lean into the…

Stay Salty.

Have you ever ‘bonked’ during a workout or felt an imbalance in your body during exercise or even in your daily life routine? If so, there’s a chance that you may have an electrolyte imbalance (low electrolytes). For many, when you hear the term electrolytes, your mind may immediately go to popular sports drinks because these products have all but claimed this term as their own. The image of a pro athlete taking a gulp of colorful juice and sweating out that same color has long been cemented in the minds of millions as the…

Trek to Zion.

Thomas Moulton, a resilient soul, made his debut on November 10, 1810, in the charming village of Irchester, Northamptonshire, England. His life took a dramatic turn when he first said “I do” to Esther Marsh in the enchanting town of Olney, Buckinghamshire, England. Together, they experienced the joy of raising two daughters, Susan, whose light faded too soon in 1836, and the spirited Sarah Elizabeth, born on March 5, 1837. Tragedy struck when Esther departed from this world in Irchester, leaving Thomas to navigate the…

Crazy Goodies.

Enrique Bautista and Gloria Vieyra are a husband and wife team that own and operate one of the most unique shops in Heber Valley. It’s no secret, as the name of their Mexican-themed snack shop implies, they make some Crazy Goodies! Enrique and Gloria grew up in different states in Mexico; it wasn’t until they came to the United States that they met. Enrique emigrated from Mexico City when he was a teenager to work with two of his older siblings. He recalls, “Back then, you could work during the winter and go back to Mexico…

Timpanogos Cave

Perhaps Timpanoga hunters, as their ancestors referred to themselves, were the first to discover the cave that now bears their name. Without a written language, there is no such recording. “Timpanogos” comes from the Timpanogos tribe who lived in the surrounding valleys from AD 1400. The name means “rock” (tumpi-), and “water mouth” or “canyon” (panogos). The Timpanogos are a proud tribe of Native Americans who once lived in central Utah, from Utah Lake in the east to the Uinta Mountains in the west, and south into Sanpete…

No café would be complete without the aroma of hot coffee, fortunately Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Café serves fresh brew from Peet’s Coffee. n my first visit, after…

Ruff Work

Shepherding: the act of guiding or directing in a particular direction; to make a group of people move to where you want them to go, especially in a kind, helpful, and careful way; the tending of sheep. While shepherding has been around for millennia, historically, it is difficult to pinpoint when the first organized sheepdog trials took place. According to various sources, the sheepdog trials we are familiar with today date back to 1867 in New Zealand and 1873 in North Wales. Regardless of the exact date and location of…

Wasatch Community Foundation Funds Assist Adaptive Athletes

The impact of the Wasatch Community Foundation's generous donation to the Intermountain Adaptive Multisport (I-AM) group in 2023 has been nothing short of transformative. The funds provided were instrumental in acquiring much-needed recreational equipment and a specialized trailer for transporting adaptive bicycles, enhancing the overall experience for the athletes involved. One of the significant highlights was the support for I-AM athletes to compete at the USA Triathlon (USAT) Nationals in Milwaukee. Six dedicated…

Today, Wasatch Community Foundation is a thriving 501c3, and the largest all-volunteer, non-profit organization in Heber Valley. Stomp it Out

What is Clogging? Clogging is a type of folk dance that originated in the Appalachian Region of the United States that uses two metal plates on the toes and heals of the shoes (called jingle or hinged taps) that usually strike on the downbeats. McKenna Flores started clogging as a toddler and hasn’t stopped stomping, striking, or smacking dance floors since. Clogging has been a family affair that began with her grandpa, who taught her mom and uncle, who later both taught her and her brother, Cameron. McKenna’s mom, LaNay…

Local Author, Lindsay Clyde-Flannigan

Local author, Lindsay Clyde-Flanagan remembers the first story she wrote. It was a fully illustrated masterpiece about a girl and her horse — Black Beauty. No, she didn’t plagiarize Anna Sewell; she just borrowed the horse’s name — after all, she was only in second grade. Lindsay laughs as she shares how she wishes she still had the book. More recently, she wrote another book about a girl and her horse, only this time she didn’t borrow any names. This time, she went above and beyond her second-grade little girl imaginings…

Destination Heber Valley

This past October marked my 20th year as a full-time resident and local businessperson of the Heber Valley. The changes over the past two decades in the Heber Valley will likely represent the most drastic pivot in our community’s history. With this milestone in mind, I find myself romanticizing the literal ‘History in the Making’ that I have observed during my time in the Heber Valley. In October 2003, the vibe in the Heber Valley was still a bit of a 2002 Olympic hangover. The community had expected a massive change in…

Shoot for the Stars

At Soldier Hollow, west of Charleston, Utah, and Deer Valley Reservoir, against the southern end of the Wasatch Mountains in the shadow of Mount Timpanogos, our nation’s top biathletes train and compete against the best from nations across the world. Speed skiing around a hilly course at Soldier Hollow is a challenge for the best of us; now add a loaded rifle strapped to your back, an Olympic-caliber shooting range, and targets. Local Wasatch County biathletes and brothers, Phillip and Daniel Radu describe the experience,…

The Return of The Hub

Whether you’ve lived in Heber your whole life or are new to our community, you probably know that The Hub is a beloved local treasure, and has been for nearly a century. Originally built in 1933, The Hub has seen a few owners and a whole lot of history, but it has always belonged to the town of Heber. The fresh paint, wood, and leather scents greet me as I walk into the newly renovated Hub. I can imagine the welcoming aroma of pancakes, freshly brewed coffee, and French fries that all great restaurants have. The main…

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

When Life Gives You Snow, Go Snowshoeing! Imagine,  for a moment, being surrounded by gorgeous mountain views on a crisp star-lit winter night. Huge feathery flakes twinkle as they fall, and a brilliant moon guides you along your path. Caught in the moonbeams, it appears you’re walking through a sea of diamonds instead of snow. You stop to take in the majesty of the moment, the still of the evening broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot. Soon,  shouts of ‘Welcome,’ friendly conversations, and laughter echo through the…

Jerry Robert Springer

How do I sum up one man’s life in a few short pages, especially one who has lived a life as full of adventure and service as Jerry Springer? I don’t. All I can do is capture bits and pieces – the moments in time that stand out – and hope those stories honor this man who has touched so many lives. Jerry’s first experience in life began with an adventure. His parents, Beryl and Tura Springer, were living in a tent cabin community near Mammoth Lakes, California. Beryl, like his father, Jeremiah (Jerry) Robey Springer, and his…

Springer Historical Home

Springers and Nokes In January 2021, David and Kayla Springer unexpectedly met Travis and Lisa Nokes while on a retreat in Mexico. They soon discovered they both had connections to Midway, Utah. The Nokes lived and worked there, and David’s great-great-great grandfather, Jeremiah Robey Springer, was one of the original settlers. David has always dreamed of living in Midway, and after speaking with the Nokes, he began the process of purchasing the Springer Farms. Since Travis and Lisa own businesses in real estate,…

Winter Trails

The beautiful Wasatch Back, Heber Valley, and west Uintah Range are home to a wide and growing collection of multi-use trails; many available for use in winter by Fat Tire Mountain Bikers (FT), Cross-Country (XC) and Back-Country (BC) skiers and boarders, and snowshoers. Hikers are not allowed to use the groomed trail system as they sink deep into the snow and may ruin the trails. There are groomed roads for winter hiking in most areas. Further, your dogs are welcome to join you as long as you pick up after their mess.…

Geology & Cultural History of the Heber Valley Region

Most articles and books on geology, anthropology, and history start with the early beginnings and progress chronologically to more modern times. For this article, we’ll follow suit, and begin with taking a look at Heber Valley’s geological history, with relatively late volcanic activity, faulting of the Wasatch and Uintah Mountains, Ice-Age glaciers, formation of the Heber Valley, and channeling of the Provo and other local rivers and streams. Culturally, we’ll summarize the man-made features of our environs, including the…

Capturing the Character

In 2004, Alex Nabaum and his wife, Shayna, built their family home in Heber Valley. While completing their basement, Nabaum looked for ski posters of the surrounding areas. He had a vision to complete their interior design by giving a nod to our local resorts. Skiing has been a family hobby for years, and — after all — they now lived in Utah with the “greatest snow on earth!” Best be celebrating that! He rummaged through many posters on his quest to find the right art to represent our resorts; there was no authenticity to…

Meditation Boost your Health

“Your thoughts are incredibly powerful. Choose yours wisely.” – Joe Dispenza, You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter I’m sitting in my hotel room, listening to the river running over rocks outside the window and reflecting on what I’ve just experienced. Less than five minutes ago, I was lying on a yoga mat on the floor of a conference room with hundreds of other people, doing something pretty incredible for a group that size: meditating. I’ve spent the past five days at a workshop with renowned meditation guru and…

Fall in Love with South Summit

Now that the temperatures are dropping, it’s the perfect time for a weekend road trip or stay-cation. The true bonus is the breathtaking fall foliage that begins to pop in the High Uintas in roughly mid-September, and puts on a dazzling show through October. A short drive from Heber up State Route 32 takes you past the Jordanelle Reservoir, providing gorgeous views of the water and surrounding mountains. Kamas Valley is home to a growing population, and once you’ve driven through, it will come as little surprise. Nestled…

Discover Disc Golf in the Heber Valley

The Heber Valley has caught the wave of a global sporting trend: disc golf is on the rise, with the region playing its part in this rapid expansion. For those unacquainted, this popular sport uses rules similar to golf; however, instead of hitting balls into designated holes, players throw small plastic discs (think mini-Frisbees) at a target. Disc golf is usually played on a course with 9 or 18 targets, which are wire baskets, hung with chains designed to catch the discs. Players throw a disc from a tee pad in hopes of…

Jamie Harmon

When Jamie Harmon first sat down to write her children’s life stories, she had no intention of writing a book, let alone publishing one. Jamie shares what inspired her to write My Divine Identity, “I didn’t set out to write a guided journal for girls. I started writing for my children. I wasn’t able to physically have children, and I wanted more than anything to be a mom. So my husband Jeff and I gathered our family together through adoption. We adopted four children, and they are truly miracles. The process of adoption…

Heber Valley Airport Revamp

From its humble beginnings in 1947 until today, Heber Valley Airport (KHCR is its national identifier) reflects pioneering aviation history, growth, change and a whole lot of flying. In its early years, KHCR was known for a diverse collection of classic general aviation and warbird aircraft and their pilots. Russ McDonald and a few partners bought the land, developed a 3,300’ runway and started a fixed base of operation (FBO) they called Heber Valley Flying Service (HVFS). HVFS began with a small (45 x 60 feet) hangar with…

Liberty Sanctuary

Many little girls dream of having a horse — I know I did. I grew up in the city with a relatively small backyard. Behind the chain link fence that separated our house from a large field — lived a horse. I never knew her name. She was nothing special to look at; slight of build, dull chocolate coat, scraggly knotted black main. She was only there for a few short weeks, but man did I love her. Every afternoon I’d run outside and she’d gallop up to greet me; her velvety nose nuzzling my fingertips as much as the metal barrier…

We Grow Together

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” Margaret J. Wheatley Right now, it’s still just a wild field with two signs on opposite ends advertising a vision of what this land will become. The goal: to build a second high school alongside a technical college that will not only create exciting new learning and employment opportunities, but also accommodate the growing population of our beautiful valley. When ground was broken at the site on May 23 of this year, those involved in…

Ballerina Farm

Our lives are filled with moments that help shape who we are, and who we want to become. Sometimes, all it takes is a flash in time, one moment, to completely alter the course of our lives. Daniel and Hannah Neeleman experienced such an instance while living in Brazil. One day, the couple visited a cattle ranch and witnessed a scene that would change everything — hogs free ranging. Daniel couldn’t stop watching the pigs as they roamed through open pasture, munching on grass side by side with the cattle. They weren’t in pens…

Bike Utah

Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like a bicycle. To keep balanced, you must keep moving forward.” Trilby Cox and Chris Wiltsie, the Co-Directors of Bike Utah, understand the importance of moving forward whether they’re riding a bike or traveling through life. Bike Utah is a non-profit program that envisions “ a Utah where complete networks of bike lanes, paths, and trails contribute to livable, healthy communities, allowing everyone to ride regardless of age, ability, race, or income.” By collaborating and working with…

Barns of Heber Valley

The traditional country barn stands as an iconic figure of yesteryear. If you were “raised in a barn” like I was, you’ll remember how dust filters through rafters and dances in the sunlight, the soothing rhythms of rain as it pitter-patters on a tin roof during a summer shower, and the sweet, permeating smell of new hay. If not, you may be able to imagine. As time slips by, a vast majority of those, now, old barns in the valley have fallen into disrepair and quietly crumbled to the ground; slipping away with the people of…

The New Oakley Diner

“I have a magical vision in my head of live music or music playing from juke boxes, with the windows open and the late summer breeze blowing in, and laughter. I just can’t wait to sit there and hear those sounds.” Leentje Klingensmith, the Marketing Director for the newly restored Oakley Diner, shares her vision for how the fresh space is going to feel. The historical Oakley Diner, formerly known as the Road Island Diner, has resided in Oakley, UT since 2007. Recently, the diner closed its doors in 2020 and went up for sale.…

Katrina Berg

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe This quote is Katrina Berg’s favorite. The German poet’s words apply perfectly to Katrina’s thick, oil paint art pieces that she creates on wood while in her Midway studio. You may already be acquainted with Katrina and her work, but if you’ve never had the joy of coming across…

Twisted Trunks

My relationship with aspen trees is a bit of a love–hate affair. I love them in the mountains. I hate them in suburban landscapes. The trees themselves are lovely. The round leaves make the most wonderful noises as they clip and rustle like organic coins colliding in a summer breeze. The airy light that passes through an aspen glade on a summer afternoon feels spiritual, calming, and edifying. I am perpetually fascinated by the flaming display that ignites the mountain landscape in autumn. Vernal emergence of their foliage…

Over 7,500 miles away, there’s a small village in the state of Punjab, India. This farming area is not only beautiful but it also offers delicious food previously unattainable in Wasatch County. But now, Heber City has a direct channel to Punjab. It’s called Little India. Traversing an Ocean It all started in 1997. Harjeet Singh was living in Northern India on a family farm. He decided to pack up his things and move to the United States, which he knew to be the “Land of Opportunity.” He had family living in Utah and…

A Sudsy Cause

It’s refreshing when someone keeps their promises — like that nice clean feeling right after washing your hands. Chris and Alise Allen of Heber teamed up with their great friends Kurt and Jennifer Offereins of Spokane, Washington, to lather up the Promise Soap Company. They’re bubbling with excitement for their new company committed to connection, community, and the environment. They believe in “better soap for a bigger purpose.” Their love for people, goodness, and nature is contagious. The Allen and Offereins families…

Keeping Tradition Alive

You might have already visited and loved the new Milk House at the Homestead Resort but in case you haven’t, allow me to describe it to you. The Homestead Resort has been a unique and beloved property in Utah since it opened in 1891 as a hotel and saloon built by Swiss immigrants Simon and Maria Schneitter. Fast forward to today and fans of the resort will be delighted to learn that the new owners have already begun an upgraded vision to the entire property while still maintaining the nostalgic, original feel of the…

Brighter Side Of Life

We certainly get our fair share of bright and sunny days on an average summer in Northern Utah. As residents of the Heber Valley, our weather might be even a little nicer than surrounding geographies. Despite this wonderous and natural reality, all things community-minded in the Heber Valley are not always equally bright and shiny. If such a razzle-dazzle reality physically surrounds us, why is there room for such contention and discontent? Earlier in my life, I was heavily preoccupied with fly fishing and travel. It just…

Let’s Rally

You’ve seen them around town. Jeeps caked in mud or covered in a thin veneer of red dust, looking like they’re coming home from someplace fun. I always wondered how someone learns to go off-roading if they didn’t grow up with it. As it turns out, Karl Malone Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Heber City hosts a Jeep Rally each summer to get new Jeep owners out on the trails and help them become familiar with four-wheeling. The dealership sees a lot of first-time Jeep buyers and they know it can be intimidating to take your new…

Jerry And Ella Simons: The Gift Of Hope

“What you do has far greater impact than what you say.” - Steven Covey Jerry and Ella Simons have spent their lives impacting others and offering the ‘Gift of Hope’ from the bottom of the ocean to the top of the high Andes of Peru and everywhere in between, including the Utah Crater in our beloved Midway. Along the way, they have discovered how to not only balance family, work, and adventure but to serve others and celebrate lives with great meaning. One aspiration, in particular, has led them to do work that changes lives…

Utah Arts Collective

Tucked away in the Heber Valley, the Utah Arts Collective has gathered top-notch teachers and talent. They work together, providing the community with incredible options for artistic and academic growth. What once began as Wasatch Dance Center has now become Utah Arts Collective. It includes dance, preschool, theater, and more. This elaborate and unique program began in 1998 when two dance teachers simply decided to form their own studio. Serendipity Vibeke Bodensteiner was living in Norway and had extensive background…

Any Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well

PHOTOGRAPHED BY KEVIN KEHOE We all love a good remix of a favorite oldie. There’s just something about the predictability of things we’ve known for a long time mixed with a fresh and unexpected twist. When I stepped across the threshold of the Old Firehouse, that feeling of ‘old meets new’ flooded over me. The building dazzles with southern light pouring in through the enormous updated windows. Visitors are welcomed by the interior’s clean lines and organic textures. The warm and fashion-forward entrance lounge made me feel…

Come Together

The Heber Valley is not only lighting up the night with fireworks this Fourth of July but also extending the festivities to an all-day-long celebration. Fifteen individuals representing different community organizations have come together to create a grassroots Independence Day celebration. 2023 marks the first year of the Red, White, and Blue Festival, which is destined to become a memorable family tradition. Jessica Broadhead, the marketing manager for Heber Valley Tourism, says this special event is “by the community, for…

Star Light Star Bright

“Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at the stars because we are human?”  – Neil Gaiman Poets, authors, painters, and musicians have dedicated masterworks to the stars for centuries. Ancient humans crafted their entire cities after the patterns of the cosmos, and some of the earliest cave artwork bears a record of their splendor. The night sky inspires us, fills us with wonder, and can change how we perceive ourselves in relation to the Universe. How tragic then that an estimated 74 percent of humans…

Little sprouts, big dreams

Sierra Prothers grew up skiing in New England, but when those mountains were no longer big enough for her, she made her way to the Rocky Mountains, eventually landing here in Wasatch County. Sierra’s travels and outdoor experiences fostered an interest in food sourcing and production; having space to plant a garden was an important factor in looking for a place to live. Sierra shared, “My partner and I found a lovely place in the town of Charleston right on the border of Heber. We were lucky enough to find a piece of…

Music in the Mountains

There is something magical about music in the mountains. The piles and piles of snow make way for green as far as the eye can see. The crisp, fresh air and the stunning scenery create the perfect backdrop for live performances. Fortunately, during the summer months of June through August, there are plenty of opportunities to experience this magic in Utah’s Wasatch and Summit counties. Let’s look at some of the top concert series and live performances happening right in our backyard. Summer Concert Series on the High Star…

Scavenger Hunt Adventure

A bright summer sun lights up the large red barn west of a pioneer home site off Southfield Road. Chirping birds in two tall pines are momentarily silenced by the Heber Creeper’s shrill whistle as she rolls southwest along the historic Heber — Provo railroad line. Suddenly, my Minepro metal detector beeps loudly, indicating a metal object approximately 8” below (according to the digital readout). I am detecting around a brick walkway that leads to the now boarded-up front door. I dig a circular hole in the reddish soil…

Explore a life-size replica of The Tabernacle from the Old Testament

Beloved members of the Heber North Stake, As you have no doubt heard, the Tabernacle event is coming to our valley!  In preparation for our new Temple, having the Tabernacle event here in the Heber Valley is an amazing opportunity to share and experience the history of our Judeo-Christian faith, while driving positive interest in temple worship. The Mayflower Star Mine

In January, 2019, while skiing down to the Sultan Express Chairlift at Deer Valley, I noticed the outlines of an old silver mine below the lift to the East, and a large mine tailing area even further down the mountain. As a trained geologist, whose first job after college was exploring for geothermal energy and related epithermal ore deposits in Utah and Nevada, my curiosity was raised! In May of 2020 I finally got the chance to hike up and visit these old mines of the Park City Mining District, Mayflower Complex. The large…

Crunchy Super Mom

In Louisa May Alcott’s book Little Women, the protagonist, Josephine March, states, “I could have been a great many things.” For those who have read the book you know that Jo March was actually a great many things — she just didn’t give herself credit. Many of us can relate to feeling as if we ‘could have been a great many things’ without giving ourselves credit for all that we have been, all that we are, and all that we have the potential of being. Sarah Harding has spent over 15 years helping others, especially moms,…

Inspiring Young Readers

“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.” - Madeleine L’Engle When Lezlie Evans was growing up she wanted to be a lot of things: an actress, a doctor, a criminal investigator, but a writer “was never on the list.” Lezlie chuckles as she recalls, “I was actually placed in a remedial English class when I was in the 7th grade. Writing has not always come easily for me. It took me hours to come up with an idea and even longer…

Healing Mind, Body and Spirit

Since opening their doors in early 2021, mental health clinic, Heber Valley Healing, has been an invaluable resource in guiding Heber Valley residents along their mental health journeys. Sisters, Cheryl McBride and Marci Heugly, opened the clinic together with a simple but powerful goal to “provide exceptional mental health services to those in the Heber Valley and surrounding areas.” Their full schedules and client success demonstrate that they are doing just that. Bridging a Gap in Heber Valley Heber Valley Healing is…

Lee Music

Tucked away on 100 South, in the heart of Heber City, there’s a magical, little place that has been enriching the lives of children and adults for over 22 years. Lee Music provides a serious music education. It takes the general idea of private music lessons and instantly ratchets up the possibilities. Whether you love classical sonatas, or dream about riffing on the electric guitar, there is a teacher who will take your dream seriously and lead you along the way to mastery — or slaying on the guitar. As a young toddler,…

Some Bunny is Hungry

2023 is the year of the rabbit. And that’s no coincidence for Ania Gorkiewicz-Sullivan as her masterpiece cake creations are truly hoppin’ this year! For years, the Heber Valley had little to no options when it came to a custom-order, made-from-scratch cake bakery. That is, until a handful of talented bakers made their way to our valley and brought a bit of extra sweetness with them. Ania (Ahn-ya) Gorkiewicz-Sullivan with Hungry Bunny is one of several bakers that have recently opened up shop here in our valley;…

Heber’s Hometown Hollywood

When James Lane was living in Rifle, Colorado, teaching middle school, he couldn’t possibly have imagined how drastically different his life would turn out. James moved from California to Colorado when he was 13. After graduating from Rifle High School, James joined the Air Force, went to college, and began dating Jane Elizabeth, whom he’d known since childhood. They married, and he decided to become an educator. James, or Jim to most, graduated from Colorado University, and he and Jane moved back to Rifle. He settled into…

Sparkling Ginger & Lemon Mocktail A Love Story Nothing belongs together quite so beautifully as ginger and lemon. Let’s combine a little zing with some sparkling freshness. Container Gardening

The soil is finally thawing, the sap’s beginning to run, and for those of us who choose to garden, it’s time to place the first small seeds into the dark soil and wait for the miracle of an emerging bud to appear. It’s no wonder ancient scientists became obsessed with alchemy, the transformation of matter. How does a tiny, dead-looking remnant of a once vigorous plant create new life when buried underground? No matter how many times I plant my garden with bulbs or seeds, I find myself marveling over this transformation…

Daniel Tiger’s Shopping Cart

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood never connected with me when I was a boy. As a child born in the mid to late 1970s, I saw plenty of opportunity, as the show was regularly broadcast and Public Television was still a thing. I endured many an episode, quite simply, because it was what was on the airwaves at that moment (streaming on demand was still a couple of decades out — hard to imagine, I know). It has taken me well into the middle-aged milestone of my journey and Fred Rogers’ passing to appreciate how inspiring and visionary…

Frye Provisions

Spring in the Wasatch Back is still a bit chilly, but it’s ‘Damn Hot’ over at Frye Provisions where Ryan and Jessie Frye are bringing their “sweet southern heat to the Rocky Mountains” with their homemade hot sauce. Ryan and Jessie Frye grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and have been involved with the hospitality industry most of their lives. They eventually ended up at the same restaurant, bar tending and, in Ryan’s words, “ one thing led to another.” Both Ryan and Jessie have adventurous souls and the couple decided to embark…

Outdoor Yoga Year-round

“Yoga takes you into the present moment. The only place where life exists.” -unknown Two miles underground, in the middle of Midway, lies a water source that feeds an incredible natural wonder. She has a lovely hourglass shape, was formed from a geothermal hot spring, and boasts a cozy water temperature of 94°F year-round. You might know this crater as Schneitter’s Hot Pot, Homestead Crater, or the Utah Crater. Regardless of the name you know her by; she has been in the making for years. Some estimate that the limestone…

Get Hooked on Fishing

When families come to the Heber Valley, it’s usually to take advantage of the many outdoor recreational activities our beautiful valley boasts: mountain biking, hiking, snowmobiling, and more! As Spring awakens the land and the rivers swell with fresh mountain snow runoff, one of the more popular family adventures is fishing. And no wonder, with eleven new state fishing records set in Utah last year, alone!  Our valley is ideally situated at the base of the Uintah Mountain range – the birthplace of many rivers that not…

Good Vibrations

“If you want to know the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”  – Nikola Tesla The positive or negative tone of a voice, the major or minor key signature of a song, or the volume and intensity of any sound, vibrates with tremendous power and energy. Simply put, sound is vibrational energy transmitted as waves that are perceived by the brain, heard by the ear, and felt throughout the body. Every cell in the body and every emotion are also made up of energy. It has also been proven…

A little creativity + imagination Inspiration Haven

AmberLee Shuler has always enjoyed creating, but it wasn’t until she started taking art classes in middle school and high school that she realized just how much she loved art! Painting with acrylics, watercolors, and oils, drawing, calligraphy, she enjoyed it all. While taking calligraphy in 10th grade, her teacher encouraged her to try out pottery. At first she was hesitant. AmberLee explains, “I didn’t think I’d really like pottery, but my calligraphy teacher was also the pottery teacher and I really liked him as a…

Fijn Cocoa

fijn adjective \ ˈfīn \ nice, pleasant fine, thin delicate, meticulous made of small pieces, grains etc. Winter is here and that means snuggling up on a couch, watching the snowflakes slowly fall, while sipping your favorite hot drink. For the ‘Bradley Clan’ that hot drink would definitely be their unique blend of Fijn cocoa.  What began as an experiment to create a hot chocolate drink, that wasn’t so sweet, quickly developed into a deliciously fun family business; sharing the ‘Fijn’ life with everyone!…

Where There is Love There is Life: Michael & Fern Spanos

Michael and Fern Spanos took a little drive from their home in Bountiful to Heber and fell in love with a home on 5th East, as Fern describes, “We looked at it and said, hey let’s move!” Michael grew up in Park City, so Heber wasn’t far from home. But Heber is where he chose to put some roots down and pour out his heart and soul. Over the years, they raised eight children, six from Fern’s first marriage and two more together, and welcomed eight foster children into their home. As Michael and Fern speak of their past, love…

Shrink the Giant

There are lots of giants in the world, formidable foes, beasts, dragons to be slain, and our job is hopefully to make those more manageable, to shrink them a little bit so that people can handle their particular trials. When Jean-Marc Barr was 16 he walked into a pawn shop in Provo, Utah. His sole purpose? To walk out with a guitar. At only 4’ 8” and 75 lbs Jean-Marc decided to use this to his advantage; placing a handful of wadded up bills and some change on the counter, he declared, “I’m looking for a guitar for my dad…

Biathlon

The biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The sport is rooted in the skiing traditions of Scandinavia, where early inhabitants revered the Norse God, Ull, as both their ski and hunting God. Initially, the combined skills of skiing and rifle marksmanship were developed for the region’s militaries during the 1700s. In 1776 the first recorded biathlon competition took place along the border dividing Norway and Sweden; it was between patrol companies. The first biathlon club, the…

Lost (and found) Treasures

When you visit Lost Treasures for the first time, it can be surprising that a store this size could hold so many different items all under the same roof.  Browsing in the unique kitchen items, hard-to-find phone accessories, and a generous sized kids section, you soon realize: this is not an ordinary store but a unique shopping experience full of things you didn’t know you needed. Lost Treasures opened almost three years ago by longtime friends who reconnected in the Heber Valley and decided to open a business together.…

Community Coffee Gratitude

If you are anything like me, one of your favorite parts of downtown Heber would be the charming, unique shops that help cultivate the small-town vibes. Whether sun shining, leaves falling, or snow twirling, one cannot help but feel nostalgic while driving down the main street of ‘rural’ Heber that seems to be disappearing. The addition of modern buildings, though exciting, often creates an appreciation for the Heber City buildings of yesteryear. If you make time to take a serious look at some of our historic structures, you…

‘Tis the Season

Schoggibirnen Swiss Chocolate & Pears Using just 3 ingredients, the Schoggibirnen is arguably the simplest Swiss dessert. Ingredients Fresh pears, peeled (leave the stem for easy handling and esthetics) or substitute 1 tin of pears ½ Cup dark chocolate 2 Tbsp butter Method Steam peeled pears for approximately 8 minutes. Let them cool before placing on 3-4 dessert plates. Using a saucepan, add chocolate (in pieces) and the butter. Carefully melt the chocolate at low heat while stirring (make sure…

Snowmobile in Heber Valley

Despite growing up in the Midwest and spending many recreation days in Wisconsin and Minnesota, I had never ridden a snowmobile until I moved to Utah. The first time my family came to visit me, I took them out to Stillman Ranch in Oakley for a guided tour. I was too chicken to drive, so I rode on the sled with the guide. (This was pre-COVID and is not frequently offered as an option anymore.) Three years later, snowmobiling is one of my favorite winter activities! Whether you’re a seasoned snowmobiler or a first-timer,…

Within You Without You

With that clarity, it is possible to see your scenario through different eyes, as if a divine shroud, or “wall of illusion,” temporarily thins. I have had several such instances in my life, and I always take notice as I perceive these glimpses as a gift. The whole performance makes sense — just for that moment. While I was recently sitting in the construction traffic, southbound on the 40 from Park City, I had one of these moments. A cover of George Harrison’s masterwork, Within You Without You by Big Head Todd and The…

Tennis Wives of Heber Valley

Five plus years ago my family and I moved to Midway to raise our then 5 and 7 year old girls. Wanting to meet new people and get involved in the community, my wife joined a local tennis league. Athough, she’d never played a match before she soon began to love the sport and the great friends she made along the way. Of course my wife wanted to get better, so I began to coach her and her teammates. The women improved quickly and soon they were invited to play on a 3.0 USTA league team. It was apparent these women were…

Ice Castles

In the early 2000s, Brent Christensen, a Pleasant Grove, Utah resident, was looking for fun things to do with his kids in the winter. He thought building Igloos would be a cool thing to do. What began as a fun backyard adventure quickly developed into the foundation for today’s Ice Castle masterpieces. As Christensen graduated from his backyard ice rink and ice forts to his current icy creations; his simple drive for exploration, innovation, and seeking joy in the cold winter months has also brought joy and wonder to…

Tail Gating

Not long ago, setting up a day-use camp in a ski resort parking lot would have been considered strictly taboo. There would have been a high likelihood that, should you bust out a tailgating kit, a resort employee would be out in short order explaining that you needed to pack up your chairs and that — barbeque grill — or you will need to leave the property. Others might be observing in bewilderment, silently pondering, “Don’t they know that you are supposed to eat and relax in the lodge?” Like many other variables today, the…

The High Star Ranch

Before it was the beautiful destination that it is today, the High Star Ranch was a quiet obscure place off the beaten path. One might have asked, “Is the Kamas Valley too far to go for a luxury stay, a world class concert venue, or great dining?” In other words, “If we build it, will they come?” The founders and management of the property took a chance on that sentiment hoping that “If we build it, they will come!” From an office overlooking the Kamas Valley, Mr. Tom Grimmett, Trustee for High Star, and Tom Schiemer,…

Meet Megan Mounteer

“If growing up means it would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I’ll never grow up.” – J.M. Barrie Megan Mounteer not only grew up climbing trees; she built magnificent forts among their branches;  she went digging in dirt; she recruited playmates among the caterpillars, snakes, butterflies, and ladybugs; she cultivated, planted, watered, and loved many a blooming thing; and more than likely ate some of the weeds she pulled. The only difference between wild-nature-loving ‘child’ Megan and ‘adult’ Megan is that…

En Plein Air

Did you know that the largest plein air painting competition in Utah is held right here in our valley? Painting “en plein air” is really just the French way of saying “in the open air.” With an easel set up right on location, this process allows artists to paint directly in the landscape they are working to capture on their canvas. For fifteen years now artists from all over Utah, and neighboring states, have gathered in our beautiful valley for Wasatch Plein Air Paradise, the signature event put on by the Midway Art…

I can understand from that perspective that if your experience is slow in getting a response, and you're not a medical professional, that can create a lot of anxiety and mental anguish." Dr. Boker and his partner, Dr. Wyatt Horsley, aim to eliminate as much of that distress as they can through their work with the Intermountain Healthcare Concierge Health program. What, exactly, is concierge medicine? Dr. Bokor describes concierge medicine as “creating a more personalized healthcare experience…

Robert Duncan

A common thread weaves its way through the life and work of Robert Duncan illuminating and inspiring his life’s path. What is this thread and driving force that ties his work together? A bright yet simple curiosity. Curiosity about interactions between people and places and time. Curiosity about wildlife and the earth they roam. Curiosity about relationships between individuals and other living things. This curiosity has driven a lifetime’s work that has shifted and evolved over time according to the current passions of…

Bottom’s Up

Sparkling water and soda are refreshing, but let’s be honest — they can get a little boring. This fall, mix up something more exciting and serve it to your family and neighbors — suitable for all ages, or just enjoy a sip for yourself on a sunny afternoon. These are a few of our favorite mocktail recipes: Faux-jito Mojito’s are so refreshing, and the fresh mint leaves and limes make even this mock version look fresh and bright. Ingredients 4 limes 40-ish mint leaves 6 tbsp sugar 1.5 liters of sparkling or…

Heirloom Midway Common & Market

In colonial English villages, a Common was a shared piece of ground where neighbors came together to spend time together, share a meal, share their lives and have fun! Anyone that’s dined on Main Street in Midway understands the level of culinary caliber available for every meal. From fluffy donuts at Judy’s to Northern European-style brunch at Blue Boar Inn to authentic chile relleno and mole at Lupita’s to hearth-to-table cuisine at Midway Mercantile; the bar is high. Luckily, newcomer and dual-concept restaurant Heirloom…

Leave no Trace Camping

I love to go out and up. Outside and up in elevation, that is! Our mountains are an invaluable treasure that people, from near and far, flock every season of the year to enjoy. Do you remember Disney’s Humphrey Bear and his ‘boss’, Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore? How about Yogi and Boo Boo, the troublesome bears who constantly went the rounds with Ranger Smith? In my wanderings, much to my children’s dismay, I often sing songs I acquired from the shows of my childhood! My favorite tune to sing when we’re outdoors is the chorus…

The Belvederes

Dr. Seuss once penned, “From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.” He’d probably be pleased to know ‘everywhere’ would include vegetables. The punch line of the Belvederes Improv show came at the beginning, when a wiggly, six-year-old boy walked into the Timpanogos Valley Theater yelling, “Carrots!” When the MC asked for a suggestion, the boy would insist again that this show was to be about carrots. And it was. There were carrot brothers and sisters; carrots being afraid of being made into a…

Bon Voyage

It’s not a rare occasion, in the stunning Heber Valley, to wake up to beautiful blue skies. Nor is it rare to see beautiful spots of colored balloons soaring through those peaceful mornings. Perhaps you enjoy watching our valley’s hot air balloons glide through the air, or maybe you have a desire to see the valley from above in one of those wicker baskets. Whoever you may be, you can’t deny the intriguing questions these fascinating aircraft bring to mind. So, let’s dive into everything you need to know about hot air…

Beneath the Surface

My first introduction to the lost town of Keetley came from a story my dad tells about him and his high-school friend, driving along the old stretch of highway 40 that then bridged Park City and Heber, before the dam was constructed in the late 80s. They had a tradition that as they approached Keetley, my dad would kick his 1964 Buick Special into neutral, turn off his engine, and coast down the hill towards Heber; then, as they approached the Keetley town limits, as indicated by a small road sign reading “Keetley,” they…

Prevention is Connection

Mental health is a broad and complex topic. This article is not meant to be comprehensive. Suicide is a sensitive and serious topic. Our deepest love goes out to anyone who is struggling, getting treatment, or has lost someone to suicide. Are You Thinking About Suicide? I know. It’s a very uncomfortable question to ask. However, it is one that has become normal and necessary in our house. Suicide is something I never thought I would have to worry about. When our daughter was admitted into a mental hospital, on three…

Molding a Midway Masterpiece

Midway is in the process of making a masterpiece out of a little mountain town. There is a lot to do, but the elected officials and residents are ready for it. This crucial creation begins with Midway’s general plan, which is being rewritten to ready it for the influx of people finding their way to this beautiful, once-hidden location. By carefully crafting its general plan, the city is attempting to protect its lifestyle and rural feel, while still providing refuge for weary travelers searching for a new home. Midway’s…

Two Roads and a Rocking Chair

There has been far more change going around the Heber Valley than the weather over the past few months. The Heber Valley has an identity of being a quiet, pastoral community. While our natural resources are undeniably our most glaringly apparent assets, the citizens define the true essence of this community. Frequently in the advertising world, we talk about ‘market differentiators.’ The root of a successful launch or campaign will characteristically involve identifying what makes your product different from the rest of the…

Midway Volksmarch

“I love to go a-wandering, Along the mountain track, And as I go, I love to sing, My knapsack on my back. The Happy Wanderer - Florenz Friedrich Sigismund As a child I had the incredible opportunity of spending time in Germany. My siblings and I are first generation born in America; both my parents are from Deutschland. One of my favorite activities while visiting my Großeltern (Grandparents) was to go walking and hiking all over. My young imagination ran wild as we traversed hills and mountains to visit castles,…

Emerging Young Artists

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Edgar Degas The emergence art contest is in its second year and is already gaining good traction. The theme this year was “My Place in the World.” The theme really inspired the youth of Heber to think of and express the interaction they have with the world we live in. Last year there were 175 entries, and this year entries soared at 255. Angie Neuberger, president of Wasatch Parent Network for the high school, was thrilled with the increased submissions. There…

IDEAL Farms

Forced to think out of the box, a new kind of classroom has arrived in our progressive community. Innovative, Discovery based, Educational, and Agricultural Leadership or I.D.E.A.L. Farms is Wasatch High School’s hands-on, outdoor classroom. Wasatch is taking students outside and getting their hands dirty in the real world; teaching them the skills they need to thrive in our competitive industries and markets. H2O Go!

From Deer Creek to Jordanelle to Strawberry to Rockport to Echo; the Heber Valley and surrounding areas have plenty of opportunities for boating and water sports. But before you go out on the water this summer, make sure that you know how to keep yourself and those around you safe. The lakes and reservoirs attract many different kinds of recreational watercraft, both motorized and non-motorized. Recently, sports such as wake surfing, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards have increased in popularity. Motorized boats, fishermen,…

Pickleball

Pickleball: the cross-generational game that is, with no exaggeration, sweeping the nation; and it’s sweeping tennis courts, gyms, and driveways across Heber Valley too. For those of you who don’t know, pickleball is something like a friendly game of miniature tennis played with oversized ping-pong paddles and a fist-sized whiffle ball, all on a court size roughly akin to that of badminton. And people are loving it! Things started getting serious in the valley when a group of about 20 friends, mostly an outdoorsy crew…

With love, Tate & Hannah

There are some unique, inspirational, and amazing stories of people who live in our valley; this is one of them. Tate Davies and Hanna Homer, along with their families, have overcome preconceived notions in the face of special needs — and the challenges that they can bring — to create a place of belonging for everyone. Their tag line “I’m down” reminds us all to relax and enjoy life with a smile. Tate Davies, the second of JW and Jen Davies’ five children, is easy going. He loves playing games, particularly Sorry, Guess…

Slow your Roll

“Cyclers see considerably more of this beautiful world than any other class of citizens. A good bicycle, well applied, will cure most ills this flesh is heir to.” – Dr. K. K. Doty Are you ready to shake it up a bit? Do you need a mood-boosting change as you head into summer? Are you looking at rising gas prices and thinking it is time to try a different mode of transportation? A bike may just be the answer. Picture yourself starting your day on two wheels, breathing in the fresh air and taking in the sights of the grand…

The Cadence of Life

Photographed by Liam Pearce “Harmony, balance, and rhythm. They’re the three things that stay with you your whole life. Without them civilization is out of whack. And that’s why an oarsman, when he goes out in life, he can fight it, he can handle life. That’s what he gets from rowing.” – George Yeoman Pocock Boys in the Boat The Latin word Credimus, translated to English means — We Believe. In 2019 five adults and thirteen students from Platte County High School in Bailey, CO believed they could tackle a crazy…

Amateur (HAM) Radio

As you are reading this, there is probably someone, somewhere in the Heber Valley, talking through their radio to another radio operator somewhere else in the country. This thought may conjure up an image of a gray-bearded man hunched over a microphone in a poorly lit, damp basement, turning knobs on a mysterious box; using a length of old speaker wire, that spent 10 years in a corner of the garage, as the antenna, and likely powering it all from a roof-mounted solar panel.  Such are the caricatures of amateur (ham) radio…

A Heber Valley Guide to Water Wise Landscaping

As Utah enters another year of drought conditions and water restrictions, what can you do to reduce your water use and still enjoy a beautiful landscape? You don’t have to tear up your entire landscape to make your yard more water wise — though some people might enjoy that challenge. There are small and simple steps you can take to make your landscape more drought-friendly: water less, check your irrigation systems, add mulch, plant adapted plants, use less lawn, and check out local rebate programs. Water Less Many people…

The Sky is the Limit

When passing Deer Creek State Park, you can see boaters, scenic mountain and lakeside views, and…the world’s longest continuous zip line course. That’s right. Zipline Utah is shattering world records in our own backyard. Zipline Utah owner, Jon Johnson, developed an interest in ziplines at a young age. Growing up in Orderville, Utah, Johnson’s family lived on a sprawling ten acres of land. At age 15, Johnson found a cable on the side of the road, took it home, and had the bright idea to try out configuring his own zip line.…

Duck and Cover

Plan for the Worst, Hope for the Best As a Utah resident, I have come to cherish my desert time. I love the Glen Canyon and using Lake Powell to share the desert grandeur with my children, who are not of the age to go hardcore canyoneering. A handful of years ago, I led my family on a 4th of July adventure to the up-lake region of Powell. Given my predispositions to adventure, nature, and exploration — I charted a course to an area that the National Park Service issued warnings about due to low water. There is no cell…

Adventure Your Potential Training for Life

Have you ever wanted to go out and run 200 miles of mountain terrain just because you could? This is a question that not a lot of people ask themselves, but what if you could? What if you could just go and do because you were physically and mentally prepared to do so? My name is Ben Light, and I am a husband, father, ultrarunner, coach, and overall life-liver from Heber City. For the past decade, my second home has been the mountains here along the Wasatch Front. If you have had the chance to spend even a few minutes…

Join the Crawfish Boil Crew

It’s summer time! Vacations are near; school’s out; and the days are pleasant and long. If you’re searching for a fun and unique activity to do close to home and after work — try fishing for crawfish at our very own Strawberry Reservoir. rCrawfish boils have long been a time-honored tradition throughout the South but over the years they have become quite popular here in land-locked Utah. Some people would say that these little crustaceans are just as delicious as lobster; some say they’re better. Most agree that they are…

Hideout Knives

A Timeless Tool Knives have been used as weapons and tools for hunting, cooking, carpentry, and protecting one’s self and family, since prehistoric times. The earliest knives, which we know of, were made of sharp rocks and flint; the first metal knives were made from copper and were double edged daggers. According to most historians the single edged knife was made during the Bronze Age 4000 years ago. Today, in our modern world, we still use knives for the same things our ancestors did; however, our choice of material,…

Valhalla

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is a magnificent hall where slain heroes from battle are received and restored by a mythical light. In Heber City, Utah, Valhalla is basically the same thing. However, instead of boar’s meat and golden shields, cutting-edge smart light cell therapies are used for healing. Dr. David Tate has been preparing for Heber’s Valhalla for decades. He has a PhD in clinical neuropsychology, and he did a clinical internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Brown University. He received a research grant,…

After all, March comes in like a lion and your party skills should, too. Make a drink with me. Sit and chat with me for a spell. I want to hear all your news! Mixed Fruit Bellini Mocktail  A Berry Burst of Flavor Mix - 1/2 pint each of 3 fresh fruits in season (strawberries, raspberries, early peaches) 1 bottle of…

The Truth is Out There

Do we have any X-Files fans in the Heber Valley? I loved this sci-fi TV drama when it was airing. For the younger, binge and streaming-on-demand crowd — we used to have to wait until the program aired on network TV to view new episodes. I would count the days in anticipation. When that time arrived, I would make popcorn, turn off the lights and try to maximize the suspense and weirdness that each chapter seemed to unfold. All anticipation would build to a satisfying crescendo as the eerie and oddly low budget theme music and…

Stepping into Spring Time

Are you tired of running from your car into your home, then back to your car, then to school, work, or the grocery store for the past few months? Well, guess what? That part of the year is over! The time has come to step into spring and rediscover the outdoor world, as our beautiful Heber Valley blossoms all around us. We call it “springtime,” but sometimes it feels more like ‘uncertainty season’ as our weather changes daily from sunshine to snow to rain and back to sun again. It’s a churning, and a season children in the…

Authenticity

Nourishing the bodies and souls of Heber Valley Gloria Grass and her son, David Perez-Medina, have been nourishing the bodies and souls of residents and visitors for decades. Their unique origin story and outlook on the food business has helped this duo run two successful restaurants in Midway; their delicious food keeps the crowds coming back for more. David was just 15 years old when he and his single mother, Gloria, immigrated to Utah from Mexico in 1997. On their journey to Wasatch County, they brought along their…

Günther Vonhaidenthaller

Everything comes down to contrast. Günther Haidenthaller points out the window at a car dealership across the street. “Look at the highlights off those two jeeps, and that cold, steely kind of stainless steel quality to the light.” He also indicates the snow-covered mountains further in the distance, pointing out the blue tones in the shadows and the warmer tones — the hint of cadmium yellow — where the sun shines. Günther is a man of contrasts. Born in Austria and raised mostly in Utah — two wildly different…

A Leap of Faith and a Little Heavy Lifting

At the start of a world-wide health pandemic, Justin Fuchs took a leap of faith and opened Iron Backs gym to share his love of health and fitness with the valley. From the beginning, the mission of the gym has been to offer an environment of support and encouragement, where anyone could feel comfortable showing up as they are in the present moment at an affordable cost. Justin expressed, “I wanted less people without dads and granddads because of health issues. That’s something we can control . . . health and fitness we can…

Destination Spring Brunch – Chef About Town

I will be the first to admit that once Christmas is over, I have an unrealistic expectation that spring should immediately present itself. Don’t hate me Heber, but winter is not my jam. Spring brings with it holidays, baby animals, renewal, and a buzz in the air that life is beginning again after a long winter’s nap. Like any hardcore foodie, I took to our streets to figure out brunch in our slice along the Wasatch Back — pun intended. Meg’s Timberline Café Let’s talk about Meg’s! Really, let’s just talk about Meg’s.…

2 Farm Boys

If you love buying local products and supporting our small business economy — you should visit 2 Farmboys. This wonderful family-owned and operated goat farm and soap-making company is located right here in our talent-filled valley. 2 Farmboys Soap is created in a ‘soap shed’ in small batches on the Cummings farm in Heber. The business sold its very first family-made, goat milk soap at a local market in 2016 and has been selling and growing steadily ever since. The Cummings family includes; JR, Colleen, Wyatt, and Kash.…

Built to Ride

It’s no secret that one of the greatest, most tangible benefits to living in or visiting Wasatch County is the proximity to high-quality, sustainable trails. Whether you consider yourself a hiker, a mountain biker, an equestrian, or just someone looking for great views in Heber Valley — you know our trails are amazing — but have you ever wondered how the trails you use came to be? THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL In 1992, the Mountain Trails Foundation was established in Park City at a time when all local hand-cut trails were…

Rebecca Proctor Fine Art

A chicken, a dog, and a paintbrush – sounds like the perfect start to an art career. “It all got started when my dog killed the neighbor’s chicken,” artist Rebecca Proctor shares with a laugh. How could an art career bloom from this you may ask? Well, let’s back up a little and you will begin to see. Rebecca says it is likely that her mother has caveman drawings on her uterus. She says, “I have drawn since I can remember. All my Christmas gifts were always art, always craft stuff. I drew and drew and drew.” With all of…

Heber Valley Business Launch

Jakob and Brodie Kahler have always been close. Close in age, close in proximity, and now close in business. When I say close, I’m referring to being near each other in time and space; to be fair — the two brothers were like most siblings — fighting, arguing, and not fully appreciating each other until later in life. Fortunately, for brothers and best friends, Jake and Brodie, their ‘later in life’ happened during High School. KNIT TOGETHER Growing up, Brodie was content to let Jake take the lead. He shared, “As the…

Ice, Ice, baby

The popularity of outdoor cold-water exposure surges in the Heber Valley. Are you ready to take the plunge? My history with intentional cold-water exposure began the summer of 2009 while growing up in Midway. My older sister and I would fill a 10-gallon bin with cold water from the hose in our backyard. We would squeeze into the container — squealing and giggling we’d stay in as long as we could stand it — we called this activity ‘cold bravery’. As I got older, my family and I continued to get in cold water wherever we…

Putting Growth and Education to the Test

Wasatch County residents have earned what seems like a doctorate in dealing with growth, but channeling change is a never-ending process that seems to be as challenging as the teenage years. Just like that awkward, formative, and stressful stage of life, Wasatch County has a lot of current issues: traffic, taxes, affordable housing, water, air quality, the airport, public safety, and on and on and on. (Take a deep breath — it’s going to be okay.) With growth being the proverbial issue on every local campaign, and education…

Creamayre Brook Farms

To be successful in business, “Find a need that’s not being met and meet it better than anyone else.” This is the mantra of Wayne and Kathy Buell, co-founders of Creamayre Brook Farm, located on Highway 40. From a sunny dining room overlooking their beautiful gardens, and what one might call a Five Star Equestrian Center, Wayne and Kathy share humble, but profound, wisdom learned over three decades of running the facility from their family farm. For so many businesses, the past two years have been challenging. Many know…

Calling All Artists!

With all of the talented artists we have here in our valley it should come as no surprise that, collectiviely, their art work can be seen from Wasatch County to all across the globe. This spring and summer there is an opportunity for our amazing artists to share their gift(s) with Summit County by creating a Historical Mural in Hoytsville, Utah. “The SCPAAB is seeking qualified artists to create a two-dimensional mural celebrating and honoring the history, heritage, and culture of Hoytsville and Summit County. The mural…

An organization has been formed called the “Heber Valley Heritage Foundation”, led by Michael Moulton along with a team committed to the preservation of the history and stories of the great people who settled here. Current technology is making this dream…

This historical fiction is full of mystery and adventure as Anastasia is trying to remember who she is. Santa Claus Teams up with Local Law Enforcement

The dim morning light reflected off of the year's first snow in an icy glow and added just the right Christmas ambiance. The Homestead Resort parking lot displayed several patrol and first responder vehicles, foreshadowing what was taking place inside. In one of the conference rooms, about 45 children from around the valley were gathered, surrounded by members of the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, the Heber City Police Department, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Wasatch County Fire Department.

Chamber of Commerce Christmas Gala 2021

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the party of the year, possibly even the decade, at their 4th annual Christmas gala on December 2nd! Two years in the making (thank you COVID), the event was planned to perfection; and made me feel as though I had traveled through time to a lively and entertaining era of 100 years ago. Citizens of the valley - some representing local businesses, others there for a good time, and all dressed in their best 1920's attire- were greeted upon arrival at the Zermatt Resort by a ‘Moffia’ gangster…

Merry Christmas to All…

Heber City is hosting an Old Fashioned Christmas celebration with all of the favorite activities this Friday, December, 3rd from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Heber City Town Hall. You might get to talk to Santa or see his reindeer. Maybe you'll want to decorate cookies or drink some hot cocoa. Perhaps a live performance filled with holiday cheer stirs up sentimental feelings. Cross off some holiday shopping and support some local vendors at their booths. Enjoy delicious food from the valley's food trucks.…

It’s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play Comes to Heber Valley

Fill in the blanks: “Every time a ______ rings, an angel gets his _________”. If you were thinking bell and wings then you must be familiar with the classic Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Timpanogos Valley Theater will be performing “It’s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play” this holiday season. Hands that Heal

Creating A Beautiful Sanctuary Unlike Anything The Heber Valley Has Ever Seen.  When Crystal Joy was young, really young, she discovered she loved giving people massages. By the age of six, she was already heading down the path that would lead to where she is today — the grand opening of Heber City’s Mountain Elite Massage Sanctuary. Youthful Beginnings “I actually started liking massage at like five or six years old. I worked on hands and feet, and I wanted to hang out with adults,” she remembers. Then, at about age…

That “No Quit” Attitude

Heber Valley Artist Feature Kevin Kehoe Poem By Waddie MitchellWhile gatherin’ cattle near the ruins of a long abandoned homestead,In the shadows of the mountains, questions swarmed around my mindOf the people who had claimed there, most forgotten now and long dead.Still, I wondered what had prompted them to leave their world behind. Searching for a life uncertain in a vast and rugged region,Up and leave their home and kin for opportunity to find,Taking little more to start with than an idea and a reasonAnd the dream…

Come together it takes a community

Knowing the children have full bellies and a warm hand to hold might make a spectator feel as if they have stumbled onto a paved, urban version of The Grinch’s Whoville; cue the singing. The children hear a soft buzzing — quiet at first and a bit confusing but all the more exciting as it moves closer. Still watching intently they soon realize that who they’ve been waiting for — Santa Clause — is arriving in a . . . helicopter? A bit of an untraditional form of transportation perhaps, but no less special for these kids as…

Only the Pure of Heart Can Make Good Soup – Beethoven

When the cold weather snaps, you can bet your woolly socks that Jan Olpin is hard at work cooking up pure deliciousness. I remember as a child, perching on a bench, with a burger and fries, in Dairy Keen’s little brick building, watching the train go round and round. This was a novelty that just never got old. It still hasn’t. This year marks the family’s 75th Anniversary of Heber’s Dairy Keen — Home of the Train. A good burger is always a hit, but don’t overlook the ‘soup-erb’ menu additions that roll in the first of…

Winter Sips

Winter is the perfect time of year for nostalgia and modern-day flair to come together. For me, creating elegant and tasteful drinks to share is a joy! I love reaching out to friends, old and new, with a heart-felt “Grab a drink, let’s chat!” It’s a great ice-breaker and conversation starter. Here are a few of my favorite concoctions for you to try — who knows, you might discover a new tradition to share. From my mad-genius recipe lab to your winter festivities — Happy Winter Wasatch! Lace-Up and Get Ready To Skate

If You’re Skating On Thin Ice, You Might As Well Dance! Anita Shreve When all the leaves have fallen, the gardens put to rest, and frost starts to sparkle our mornings; some might lament the coming of winter. However, others look forward to this time of year for one special reason — the Midway Ice Rink is ready to open. Visitors who come to Midway often say they come for the magical, quaint, small-town feel. Midway draws visitors and locals alike with its lively town square, plenty of incredible restaurants and shops…

Do you feel as if it’s time to turn in your skin resignation? Or, have you reconciled with the skin you inherited from your parents? Don’t give up! Fieldcraft Survival

“We don’t get to pick the time, place, or how an emergency happens. We just get to choose how prepared we are for it.” Austin Lester, Fieldcraft Survival It was not on a whim that Fieldcraft Survival moved to Heber Valley this past year. In the summer of 2020, while the training team was passing through our town from Montana to Prescott, Arizona, they were compelled to stop and take a look around. The Heber Valley possesses some very attractive attributes for a company based around readiness: a culture of preparedness,…

Sweet Tooth

Growing up in the Heber Valley, Stefanie Richardson always had a sweet tooth. After all, she had spent a lot of time hanging around her grandpa’s donut shop, Wally’s Donuts, in Salt Lake City. “He was a hard worker, and he inspired me,” she says of her grandpa. (I’m sure anyone whose livelihood was making donuts all day would put stars in the eyes of a young child.) As she got older, Stefanie continued to nurture her sweet tooth; taking up baking and experimenting with making different goodies to eat and to share. She never…

Pigmentation of Pescatorial Pursuit

Chris Peterson has tried almost every form of outdoor recreation. He has snowboarded, mountain biked, and backpacked, but the thing he keeps coming back to, the sport that connects with his soul, is fly fishing. He says, “For my personality, for who I am, fishing is the thing. It’s about those moments of magic where you’re face to face with the wild animal, these crazy looking creatures.” Fishing is not the only thing Chris happens to love. He is also passionate about painting. The Contemplative Man’s Recreation So,…

Santa, Baby!

Can you really do Christmas year-round? “Yes. Yes, you can!” says Jenn Mangum-Whaley of Midway. “At Swiss Days, every year I’d have a Christmas booth, and it did so well, I thought, `I’m going to try it!’” So, together with her husband, Jason, they opened Kringles, the only retail store in Heber Valley selling Christmas year-round. Jenn, who was an accounting major at BYU, and worked as an interior designer for 15 years in the DC area before moving to Midway five years ago. “I’m kind of a serial entrepreneur. I love…

Happy Hanukkah

“The spirit of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is shared by all people who love freedom.” – Norma Simon, Author Freedom we all know is not free. And though the cost of freedom is always high, one cannot afford to surrender or submit. Across all cultures and as far back as oral recollections and written records go, there have always been tales and historical writings of those who would remove the freedoms of others and of those who would rise up and fight for their people’s independence. As a nation, we celebrate our…

Of Honesty and CommUNITY

I live in a messaging world as a profession, and I will share a trade secret with you all. Top marketers identified this concept on Madison Avenue decades ago, and we now have a multi-generational hive of well-trained consumers as a byproduct. Products for consumption may include goods, services, and ideologies — all of which receive promotional support through sophisticated marketing efforts. The obstacle is that freethinkers are bad for business. It is far more advantageous to have a consumer base identifying with your…

Heber Valley Grub

Winter and the holidays are so incredible to me! It is a time of pure happiness where the realities of everyday life go to hybernate alongside most of Mother Nature. Slowing down with family, friends, and traditions, is as time honored as Thanksgiving dinner. It’s the souls that consume a Chef’s food that make memories, feelings, and moments that encompass a good meal. With the holidays fast approaching and the winter hibernation upon us, I have some thoughts about building memories around more than just your home table.…

Adventures Of Skinner

The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms are strong as iron bands. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. “The Village Blacksmith” It is believed that Albert Einstein once said, “Life is a journey with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all experiences to enjoy.” For David “Skinner” Collins, that saying couldn’t be truer. Anxious to get started, Skinner began his life’s journey two months early. At two pounds six ounces, he fit on the palm of his father’s…

Heber Valley’s Historic Preservation

Written by Michael Moulton with Jim Ritchie “In the end, our society will be defined not only by what we create, but by what we refuse to destroy.” -John Sawhill When people ask what I am doing nowadays, I explain that I am Chairman of the Heber City Historic Preservation Commission. Inevitably they ask, “What is that?” I stumbled in answering that question to the point where I decided several months ago to write what I called a “White Paper” on all matters pertaining to Historic and Heritage Preservation just to keep me…

Digging up Town

Jump back in time to the Roaring Twenties in Heber Valley. World War I and the Spanish Flu Pandemic were finally over, and the valley faced an extraordinary time of prosperity and growth. Electrical appliances, automobiles, film, telephones, and radio all revolutionized residents’ lives. Let’s interject running water and improved sewer systems amidst these advances. It may not sound exciting and forward-thinking in today’s day and age, but in the 1920s, mainlines of water and sewer were impressive steps into the future.…

2021 Wasatch County General Election

03. November 2021 – Wasatch County, Utah While most of us were sleeping, city and county staff spent their night counting ballots into the wee hours of Wednesday morning.  As of this reporting there are currently 40 provisional ballots waiting to be verified and many mail-in ballots expected to arrive over the next few days. Altitude With An Attitude

The Heber Valley Sits Comfortably At Just Over 5,500 Feet Above Sea Level. If You’re Coming From A Lower Elevation, There Are Steps You Can Take To Ease The Transition To A Higher Altitude. A few years ago, my husband and I spent a week in Newport Beach, California, and needed to be in Aspen, Colorado the next day. As we raced through the states, we hardly noticed the uphill drive. Arriving in Aspen, we settled in. However, we soon noticed headaches, dizziness, and nausea. It took a day before we realized what was…

Close To Home

How often do you think about where your food comes from? We’ve become a civilization of packaged foods, freeze-dried, vacuum-packed, hands-off food options everywhere. With just a few clicks on a keyboard, and doorstep delivery, it’s possible to get spices straight from India in the same box as small farm-made jerky from Tennessee. I contrast this with having grown up with beautiful home-cooked meals from my Italian grandmother; using fresh-picked tomatoes, herbs, and zucchini from the garden, I learned to appreciate…

Bar J Wranglers

A chuckwagon is a time-honored piece of history in the story of the American West. All the cowboys’ nourishment on the trail came as grub hauled and served from that iconic wagon following the cattle. The chuckwagon was the heart and soul of any proper cattle drive. The Bar J Chuckwagon in Wilson, Wyoming, has been the heart and soul of the community and visitors for 44 years. Carrying on the cowboy tradition of music, song, and storytelling over beans and biscuits, Babe Humphrey and his family have created their legacy.…

Fall Harvest Mixology

Fall Harvest is that special time of year where outdoor activities start to have a snap of chill in the air, and being social takes on new life indoors once the outside fun ends. The Wasatch Back has plenty of space to take your friends for a cocktail or mocktail happy hour with plenty of small bites to compliment your drinks. Our favorite places to snag a drink in this ole’ town are many, but you can just as easily make your favorite concoction at home with some ingenuity and in-season fall ingredients. Here are a few…

Life Is Better On Two Wheels

The leaves crunch under-tire as the crisp air greets and awakens your senses. Fall in all its colorful splendor is finally here! And, what better way to welcome autumn than with a bike ride in good company? Slim and Knobby’s Bike Shop has been hosting group road and mountain bike rides for the last few years. On Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, a group of road bikers makes their way around the valley by riding in a big clockwise loop. Making mostly right turns Thursday evenings, they’ve dubbed their ride; Thursday…

Your Move

I woke up this morning in a classic rock daydream. The tune echoing in my mind was ‘Your Move,’ from the 1971 release of The YES Album by the British prog-rock band, YES. I couldn’t justify a reason why this particular song should be forefront in my mind — so I took a moment to revisit it to see if, perhaps, there was something else there. Take a straight and stronger course to the corner of your life. Make the white Queen run so fast she hasn’t got time to make you wife. ’Cause it’s time, it’s time in time…

Discover The Bronzes Of Midway

The following words are transcribed on the invitational bronze plaque that is part of “The Bronzes of Midway,” located in Midway’s Centennial Park. “Brigham Young encouraged the early settlers to beautify their homes and respective cities and towns, to ‘do that which will increase beauty and excellence among the people,’ and to surround themselves with the sounds of pleasing and beautiful music, together with thoughts and words that edify. He went on to say, ‘This will make us happy.’ These words and sculptures are an…

Autumn Adventures

It is hard to imagine that more could be written, said, or conveyed about The Sundance Resort. With over 50 years of history, it has a life force of its own that is well-known around the world. Reviews abound for this timeless spot along the Wasatch Back, but then again, the elegance of Sundance is its uncanny and vigorous ability to be exactly what you need, when you need it — a true chameleon while simultaneously an intimate and metamorphic experience. The nuance of Sundance is — it is always this way each time you visit.…

Beljar Home

“Laid back luxury for lifestyle and home” is the statement Beljar has listed as their home decor shop’s description but when you walk through the doors of the local Heber shop, you quickly find out its meaning runs much deeper than that. Opening their doors in April 2020, owners Aimee Simpson and Desiree Ashworth had no idea what to expect in a time when the whole world was shutting down and no one knew what was on the horizon. To say they took a risk and opened full of hope, would be an understatement. They stuck…

Vernon Murdock

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” – Pablo Picasso Vernon Murdock began creating art from the moment he first figured out how to hold a pencil. As a very young child, he loved nature; he loved the mountains and the fields that surrounded his home — so he drew them. He enjoyed looking at and watching cartoons — and sketched those too. Vernon’s curiosity about how things worked was no different — he illustrated all the stationary and moving parts. He adored and loved his…

WHAM This Guy Can Sing!

I recently caught one of Robert’s shows with my wife and kids; we heard audience members exclaim things like, “This takes me back to when I was a teenager!” Let’s face it, most impersonators either look like their hero, or sound like them, but rarely both. But this guy has the look, the voice, and the dance moves to boot! Watching him is like taking a totally tubular trip back to the ‘80s and ‘90s, when George Michael ruled the radio with his silky-smooth, reverberating vocals and energetic dance beats. It’s music that…

The Resurgence of Upscale Dinning

If you were to ask chefs around Anytown, USA, pre-pandemic, how they were feeling — most would tell you, “I’m tired. I’m not sure it is worth it anymore.” Prestigious food magazines such as Food & Wine and Fine Dining have written articles over the past two years expressing the consensus that Chefs have been struggling to fight what we affectionately call “the crush”. The crush is the predominant demand to stay relevant in the ever-changing world of trends and the newest “Best Of” list that seems to take on a life of…

Wasatch Women Defending The Wasatch’s Back

WITH THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS COVERAGE OF PROTESTS, RIOTS, CIVIL UNREST AND VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA, HAVE YOU STOPPED TO WONDER How Safe Are We? Having traveled through much of the United States and living in Italy for almost two years; I’ve always considered the Wasatch Back to be a comparatively safe area to live, but modern living means I can’t stay in the community 24/7. I also work in various cities all across America, so where exactly is “safe?” Each year the FBI issues a report of the Safest Cities and Towns in…

Play Stay Dine Explore Shop

The lost art of a “staycation” needs to be dusted off and put back into circulation, and this summer is just the time to do it! For most, vacation means experimenting in new parts of the world. It goes beyond discovering but rather immersing ourselves in a pocket of memories carved out in one to two-week increments. The Wasatch Back is incredibly fortunate to be situated within minimal driving distance of everything from a quaint bed and breakfast to a swanky 5-star resort. Throw in some incredible scenery, and what…

500 Hours Outside This Summer

Many parents are aware their kids are spending too much time indoors using electronic devices. A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the average eight to eighteen year old spends 7 hours and 38 minutes of electronic screen time per day. Let’s go outside! Outdoor play time helps to balance a child’s day and provide mental and physical health benefits. Did you know that most experts agree that 4-6 hours of playing outside each day is optimal for child health? Here are 25 fun ideas to get you going!…

Memento Mori

Being a teenager is rough. I certainly worked through my fair share of disillusionment during my run through the teen-to-early-adulthood years in my life. Reflecting on those years from my ‘present’ perspective can evoke some feelings of awkwardness. I would be willing to wager that I am not alone in the thought process: “if I could go back then knowing what I know now, I would do differently.” It wasn’t all bad, though. I remember numerous carefree days with no agenda. I remember walking through manicured park lawns…

Heber City Tabernacle

When Heber City Main Street’s Tabernacle Was Facing Demolition, a Community Banded Together to Protect Their Heritage. As a resident of this beautiful valley, and an admirer of anything local, I have a deep appreciation for all the history we share and all the beautiful, historical buildings and homes that are still standing. One of my favorite buildings is the Heber City Hall, or as it was originally known, The Wasatch Stake Tabernacle. As I gaze at or walk its corridors, I find it easy to wonder about the past. If only…

Next man up!

Once there was a delicious soup. It was created with homemade recipes, and people loved it. They loved it so much that a big factory was built to make more of it. As people ate more and more soup, the factory tried to keep up with the demand. Finally, Bear Creek Country Kitchens moved the soup production elsewhere. What would happen to the enormous soup factory that had housed the facilities? According to Amaria Scovil, Director of Wasatch County’s Joyce & M. Anthony Burns Recreation Center, “When they decided to sell…

Girls Rule

Several winters back, Jennifer Thorne climbed the north ridge of Mount Nebo through waist-deep snow until she crested its 11,861-foot-high summit. During a time of year when most folks are cuddled up in front of a fire with a good book; Jennifer and two of her friends stood atop the highest mountain in the Wasatch enjoying the priceless 360-degree view of snowy mountains and grassy valleys. Removing skis from their backs they tackled a technical ski descent down one of Utah’s most imposing mountains. Would anyone believe…

Born in Scotland Stitched in America

If you’re one of the brave men and women who regularly don this delightful article of clothing, then you may have heard the saying, “It takes a real man to wear a kilt.” It’s a phrase often spoken — in a comical attempt at sounding Scottish — in our home every time our son wears his kilt — which is pretty much every day! In 2019 we adopted a new saying, one that jumped out from the tag on a newly acquired Commando Kilt from Sport kilt. “A man in a kilt is a man and a half!” My son’s obsession with kilts began years ago —…

Chef About Town

Keep an Eye Out For These Meals on Wheels and Grab a Bite This Summer Cucina Rustico · Taqueria Los Cunados · Yalla Food Truck There is something nostalgic about eating outside during the summer. Where I come from in the South, bare feet and something in your hand as you run through a park or sit at a ball game is the quintessential, hallmark movie moment that come to life. I think this is what I love most about tasting my way through the Wasatch Back; it reminds me that great food and good-hearted people make a community…

Heber Valley Meats: A Cut Above

An Unknown Rancher Once Said, “In Winter’s Chill or Summer’s Heat . . . Farmers and Ranchers Work so the World Can Eat.” Farms and ranches are more than wide swaths of land used to raise crops and livestock. They are a family’s heritage and future. Jessie Morris and Chad Murdock understand the importance of both heritage and looking towards the future; it’s one of the main reasons they opened a butcher shop right here in their beloved Heber Valley. Jessie and Chad have been best friends since middle school. The Morris…

Jordan Daines

Jordan’s studio is bright and open and full of natural light. Large paintings lean against the wall, some complete, while others are awaiting their turn. An easel sits in the corner with a canvas adorned by a beautiful array of vibrant colors coming to life as they circle around and around. To some, the looping pigments resemble tree trunk rings; others see a thumbprint or an oyster shell. One of the more substantial linear abstracts Jordan loves to tackle takes up a good portion of another wall, while a cart sits with wet…

Emergence Art Contest

Inspired by Our Home Town The majestic and varied landscapes of Wasatch County have inspired artists from across the globe since the early pioneers first settled here. Today our valley’s mountains, rivers, fields, farms, and skate parks are inspiring a whole new generation of young artists. The year 2020 brought about a lot of change for everyone — in Wasatch County, a group of PTA presidents representing the district’s elementary, middle, and high schools, decided to change things up a bit too. After much deliberation…

Utah Governor Announces Vaccine Eligibility for All Adults

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has announced that adults throughout Utah will be able to schedule Covid-19 vaccinations beginning on March 24th. In addition, the Pfizer vaccine will be available to those ages 16 to 18. It is the only vaccine approved so far for the younger age group. The vaccination expansion was announced sooner than expected. This was partly due to requests from local health departments. As the state races to provide vaccinations to underserved populations, such as the homeless and other groups, mobile units…

Heber City Mayor gives State of the City Address

Heber City Mayor Kelleen Potter gave her State of the City address in a live broadcast on March 10, 2021. Beginning with a short video, she displayed a quote from the Salt Lake Tribune that stated, ‘For the second year in a row, Heber ranked No. 1 for growth among the country’s smaller ‘micropolitan areas,’ with populations between 10,000  and 50,000.” 2020 estimates put Heber’s population just above 18,500. By 2050, projections have over 30,000 people living within Heber City’s limits. Mayor Potter started out by…

2020 Year-End Real Estate Market Recap

I know, I know! Why would we want to revisit 2020 when we are so glad to be over it and pushing ahead for a better 2021? I don’t know about you, but I want my rear-view mirror to have cute little bobbles dangling from it instead of my assortment of face masks. Regardless, 2020 as it pertains to Utah Real Estate is something to marvel at. It’s nothing like we have ever seen. Low available inventory, record home sales, record sold prices, and exponential homebuilding increases. Utah has had the fastest growth rate over…

Fortune Favors the Prepared

Recall Aesop’s fable The Ant and the Grasshopper. In all his Greek wisdom, Aesop told of wise ants and their preparations against leaner times in comparison to foolish Grasshopper, who found great pleasure in his life, until winter winds began to blow. He mourned taunting remarks to his busy little friends in earlier days and found himself at their mercy when times were tough. The moral of the story: Be Prepared. Fortunately, we don’t need to spend our entire summers hauling necessary sustenance into a hole in the ground.…

Steve became a master of the BBQ! Fast forward to today and you’ll find Steve and Heatherly are still smoking up a storm. The dynamic duo’s restaurant, Goochy Goo BBQ, is a local favorite right on Main. But it didn’t happen overnight. What do a hobby, an intuitive wife, a grandchild, and the desire to serve, have to do with one…

Golf in the Wasatch

Once again, it’s that time of year. The remnants of the black snow are melting leaving odds and ends of buried treasures, or bits of trash on the curbs. The birds chirp a little louder in the mornings. And blades of grass are popping up along the fairways. It’s Spring. It’s golf. It’s time. “Golf…is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well”. – P.G.Wodehouse…

Relationship Renewal

Remember the falling? The times you couldn’t wait one more second to see each other. The conversations and hanging on to every word shared. The feeling that there’s no way you’ve known one another for just a couple of months because you feel you’ve known this person forever. Take a moment and remember. Falling in love is exhilarating. There’s nothing else like it. Staying in love? Staying in love can sometimes feel more exhausting than exhilarating; however, it can provide an incomparable foundation to build from. A…

Soldier Hollow Hosts Utah’s Annual Skijoring Competition

Utah’s annual skijoring competition was held on Saturday at Soldier Hollow. Skijoring is an event where a skier or snowboarder is pulled by a horse and rider. The group races through a course including jumps, gates, and rings. Skijoring is not a new sport. Reindeer skijoring occurred in the Nordic Games of 1901, and it was used as transportation for hundreds of years before that. Skijoring behind horses made its way to North America in the early 1900’s. Brian Gardner and his friend, Joe Loveridge, had seen the sport in…

5A State Swim Meet Held at Wasatch Aquatic Center

The 5A State Swim Meet was held at the Wasatch Aquatic Center this weekend. The championship event was originally scheduled to occur at Brigham Young University. However, a few weeks ago, due to Covid concerns, BYU decided not to hold the meet at its pool this year. Wasatch stepped in, and the 5A meet was moved to Heber City. Since Wasatch is a 5A team, they were able to compete at home. Wasatch Aquatic Director Dennis Tesch believes it means a lot to the Heber Valley community to have the state championship here. “We…

Heber City Announces Parking Ticket Forgiveness Initiative

It’s tough work driving a snowplow. When everyone else is staying in, they are going out in the worst weather. The plows are there earlier than the commuters trying to keep the roads clear, even while it’s still snowing. And it’s almost impossible to clear the roads well when cars are parked along the street. That’s why it is against City Code to park on the street when plowing is necessary. But some are surprised about the regulations. In fact, Heber City police have given over 300 tickets in the past few weeks for…

Goodbye 2020. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out! We have been barraged with negativity about the year 2020. True, there were some bad things that happened this year. Okay, a lot of bad things. However, there’s always another side to the story. 10 reasons to love 2020: 1. The kids got more sleep. Really, sleep has so many health benefits. So, when the kids all came home from school permanently in March, definitely a shocker, they were probably completely sleep deprived from years of waking up at unearthly…

Nutcracker Tea Raises Money for Children’s Justice Center

The Wasatch Dance Center Foundation’s Nutcracker Tea was held December 3-5 as a fundraiser for the Children’s Justice Center (CJC). The foundation normally puts on several benefit performances of the Nutcracker each December. They brought in $14,500 for the CJC in 2019. This year, the full-length show was unable to be performed because of Covid-19 restrictions. Instead, the Nutcracker Tea became a bigger, more involved production, with Zermatt Resort donating their Bernese Event Center. The group performed a 35-minute…

Make That Change

I am a stubborn individual. Many times I have pondered whether this character attribute is, in fact, a virtue or a vice. I can see how being persistent in certain circumstances has led me to personal success. I can also see instances where my refusal to alter a course has brought unnecessary hardship to my life. I suppose the answer lies somewhere within the fabled words of Kenny Rogers in that you need to “know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away and know when to run.” Life is a gamble these…

A Legacy Lived and Loved

On a sunny August morning, Renee Fitzgerald Johnson sat outside the house she was born in while passersby honked and shouted at her. I know it sounds horrible, but it wasn’t. It was quite the opposite. Renee was celebrating her 95th Birthday! Her children and grandchildren had decorated her front lawn with brightly colored letters, numbers, and balloons. Announcing to all that today was a special day, and the beautiful woman waving was an amazing lady who’s lived an extraordinary life.

Booming Real Estate

In early March 2020, we all received a crash course on COVID, whether we liked it or not. As quarantine, business shutdowns, and required masks became the new norm; it became abundantly clear how reliant we all truly are on each other. Assessing the four necessities of life became front and center: food, water, clothing, and shelter (and apparently toilet paper).

Wasatch Women in Business

New Covid Restrictions Mandated for Wasatch County

Utah’s government launched a new “Level of Transmission” index on Tuesday. It will provide a more scientific way for assessing each county’s Covid situation, along with new restrictions created to fight the current rise in cases. Color-coded guidelines are discontinued.  Wasatch County is one of six Utah counties currently on "high transmission" risk. Levels will be reassessed weekly. They are determined by looking at case rates per 100K, percent of test positivity, and statewide ICU usage.   The Governor did not enact…

Adding Extra To The Ordinary

It can bring special moments to remembrance and form new unforgettable memories. Art in public places has that same power and is accessible to everyone. The As Yet Unwritten Story Of The North Village

Just to the North of Heber City, there is a little area of open land that is unassuming and easily overlooked. It’s known as the North Village. And there are some big plans in the works for this patch of ground. Due to purchases made and density granted years ago, this area is set to become one of the most active and growing areas of the entire Heber Valley. Many are concerned about what might come. Others are excited by the possibilities. How it all turns out depends on actions taken now, during this little phase of…

Discover Power In Breath

"I bungee jumped off a cliff the other day. I was terrified. As the eight-year-old daredevil next to me went down, then back up, he turned towards me and said, ‘this is exciting!’ so I jumped – and it was exciting.” “I just had to let the fear go,” Kasey Sorensen explains as we tour her beautiful space, The Studio, in downtown Heber City. Sorensen is no stranger to jumping in with both feet; she was a hairstylist for twenty years before opening The Studio. During this time, she realized most of her clients lacked the…

Bob McPhie

The scene before me is reminiscent of the old Western song lyrics, “empty saddles in the old corral.” Saddles, tack, and spurs now sit quiet and gather dust, guitars lie where memories of Western melodies waft, but Bob’s eyes still twinkle. Bob McPhie is one of the few great American Cowboys left in the Heber Valley, not to mention, one of my childhood idols. I fondly recall sitting in the grandstands of the old local rodeo arena beside my grandpa. I would balance my popcorn on my lap and clap for Bob as he rode in the…

Now imagine that you don’t have to imagine it at all!…

Russ McDonald Field

Amelia Earhart once asked, “What do dreams know of boundaries?” As children, our dreams have no boundaries — we can become anyone — do anything — the possibilities are endless. When Russ McDonald was knee-high to a model airplane, he dreamed of flying. Towards the end of WWII Russ joined the Navy and served as an enlisted man in San Diego, working on aircraft, not flying them, but don’t worry — Russ was just warming up his engines. After WWII, Russ put the GI Bill to good use. He attended mechanic school, learned to fly,…

Preserving Our Land For Generations To Come

82 acres of open land in Midway will remain undeveloped thanks to generous hands. Utah Open Lands and Midway City were thrilled to work with Kem C. Gardner in placing 82 acres under conservation easement. Gardner, who has owned a home in Midway since the 70s, has been concerned as he’s watched Midway “slowly lose its rural flavor it gets more and more built out.” Gardner said, “I’ve worried that we need to protect our open lands as much as possible.” Gardner is a real estate mogul and has many impressive titles, but…

Timpanogos

What stands 11,749’ high, has a heart, a saddle, an emerald, a shack, and some goats? If you’ve been in Heber for even a short time, you’ll know the valley’s pride lies in the great mountain that sprawls to the west where the sun settles each night. Mount Timpanogos creates a portion of the eastern wall of the Wasatch Front. Often folks claim we, here in Heber, reside on the backside of the great Timpanogos. We’d like to beg their pardon. They happen to be discombobulated, not realizing that we have the front seat to…

With Liberty And Access For All

The Right To Roam Looking out across the beautiful, expansive Heber Valley, there is still a predominance of green fields and open space. Although housing growth is exploding in some areas of Wasatch County, the Wasatch Back, overall, still has much lower building density than the Wasatch Front. Open space is a widely discussed topic here. A majority of Heber Valley residents have indicated a strong desire to protect open space. It’s an important issue. However, public access to those spaces is a topic that is often…

The Western Uintas

A couple and their two kiddos stand on the summit of Bald Mountain — located in the Uinta Mountains, Northeast of Heber, just off of the Mirror Lake Highway. At ground level, the mountain appears to be just a pile of boulders, but from the family’s elevation of 11,947 feet, the magnificent peak offers incredible views. With big smiles, the children point at distant, abrupt mountains wrapped in cliff bands. Everything around them is visible. Looking past Mirror Lake far below, they spy the Duchesne River drainage filled with…

Leaning In

"Things are tough all over,” a phrase coined by a popular movie from the early 1980’s — but every bit as accurate today as it was then. Surrounded by a national economic crisis, social instability, and political unrest, I think it is crucial to acknowledge that this is not the first time that any of these things have happened in our great nation. If we look back at the pioneers that settled in the Heber Valley, we would recognize how difficult life was for them. An expression commonly used by these pioneers when…

Swiss Days 2020 Goes Online!

Labor Day Weekend 2020 will be unusual in the Heber Valley. Swiss Days, a statewide favorite, was cancelled back in May due to Covid concerns. The massive craft, food, and entertainment event usually brings thousands to the valley each year. It is one of Utah’s largest festivals. 2020 would have been its 73rd year. However, there is still an opportunity to purchase items online from Swiss Days’ vendors. According to www.midwayswissdays.org, there will be a “one-time only Midway Swiss Days 2020 online vendors' showcase.”…

Heber City Creates Main Street Banner Ordinance

The Heber City Council recently updated the city’s policy regarding banners posted on Main Street’s light posts. This was partially in response to an emotionally-charged, split opinion among local residents concerning Pride banners, which have been allowed on the City’s light posts for the past two years. Heber City Council Member Ryan Stack, an attorney who has worked as a public prosecutor since 2007 and has served on a Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committee, explained why the change was necessary. “Last year’s…

Heber to Hold Public Open House

Heber City will be holding an open house on Wednesday for public review of recommendations from the Parks and Trails Committee. The public is invited to attend virtually over Zoom. The meeting will begin at 6pm and again at 7pm, August 26, 2020. The public open house sessions will be recorded and available for viewing afterwards on the Heber City website. The city has been working with an outside consulting organization, Landmark Design, to create a vision for the city’s future parks. They met in January 2020 to begin the…

Spin Cafe – HV Chamber Business Of The Month

This pandemic has caused many businesses to adapt, get creative, and re-think the way they conduct business. We would like to recognize our business owners, government officials, and our community members for their commitment to Heber Valley. Our small businesses have been able to stay afloat because of the unwavering support of our locals and government officials. The Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce recognizes Spin Cafe as our business of the month for their ongoing efforts to keep our community fed and nourished during…

Wasatch School District Opens its Doors

Wasatch School District welcomed students back to school on August 17, 2020. The district opened on its original start date, a feat which was unattainable for many other districts across the country. Even in Utah, only four districts plan to be open by the 17th. Several have planned openings later this week. And many others will begin even later. Some states are still keeping schools closed. In fact, 8 states, plus the District of Columbia, do not have in-person instruction at all right now. Some are planning for delayed…

The Show Must Go On!

The Timpanogos Valley Theater (TVT) is opening its 2020 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat today. It will run in the evenings on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from August 12-22. All evening performances will begin at 7:30 pm. Saturday’s shows will also include an 11:00am matinee. The show was originally scheduled to run in May, but it was postponed due to health concerns. TVT determined in early July that a modified, outdoor performance might be a possibility. Outdoor, socially-distanced…

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is studying options to alleviate congestion on Main Street in Heber, and they are asking for public input. Current information is availble on the website at https://hebervalleyeis.udot.utah.gov/. The Heber Valley Parkway Corridor Planning Study was completed in 2019. It was determined then that further data…

Art Murals coming to Heber City

CAMS’ Art in Public Places Initiative kicked off this week by launching the first of several huge murals in Heber City. The Community Alliance for Main Street (CAMS) partnered with Heber City and the Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce to create the artwork. According to Mayor Kelleen Potter, the murals are “an investment in our downtown. Data shows investing in downtowns brings back great returns, often $3 for every dollar spent.” The inaugural mural will be on the north side of the Heber Valley Visitor’s Center at 475 N.…

Wasatch High to Allow Fall Sports

Sports fans will be pleased to know that Wasatch High School is planning to have cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and even football this Fall. Some accommodations will be made to allow the sports to go forward. Ryan Bishop, Assistant Principal, said that a baseball program was held this summer with 30-35 participants. Protocols included extra sanitizing and cleaning, among other things, and there were no issues with Covid. The football team has also been holding drills and practices with very limited…

Wasatch School District Approves Plan for Reopening

Wasatch School District approved their plan for reopening schools at a meeting on July 21, 2020. District plans have been evolving since last March, when kids were sent home unexpectedly due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We have worked very closely with to put things in place,” Garrick Peterson, Director of Academics, explained. “We’ve put measures in place that make it safe to come back to school for our teachers, our staff, and our students.” Parent survey results showed 50% of parents desire full-day, traditional…

UDOT to Build New Traffic Signal At 3000 South in Charleston/Daniel

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is building a new traffic signal at the intersection of 3000 South and U.S. 189. On July 23, construction crews will be widening the right turn lane and paving the east side of the intersection. This work will require restricting access to U.S. 189 from westbound 3000 South between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Access to the Wasatch County Waste Transfer Station will be allowed from 3000 South and from U.S. 189. Residents will need to use 3000 South to Daniel’s Road as an alternate…

UDOT to Reduce Westbound U.S. 40 to Place Bridge Beams

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will be setting the first bridge beams for the new bridges on U.S. 40 near the Mayflower exit. Crews are scheduled to set up to six beams at one of the north overpass bridge locations from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.  Placing the beams will require closing one of the uphill lanes of U.S. 40 between the Mayflower interchange and the Summit County line. Drivers should expect moderate to heavy travel delays as a result. Crews are scheduled to place the remaining beams at the…

Big Hollow Fire at 22% Containment

The Big Hollow Fire continued to rage Friday, as firefighter crews worked tirelessly to protect the town of Daniel. Heber Valley residents watched as huge flames were clearly visible on the mountain Thursday night. Big Hollow Fire had consumed 418 acres and was 22% contained by Friday evening. It began at around 4:30 pm Thursday afternoon, just above the Big Hollow Shooting Range. The specific cause is still under investigation. It was determined to be a human-caused fire, based on lightning maps of the area. Those…

Wasatch County Fair (2020 version) is On!

The Wasatch County Fair will be held August 5-8, 2020. Although this year will be different from past events, the organizers have come up with some unique, safe ideas for family fun! “We have great events and activities planned for Fair Days this year,” says Amaria Scovil, Director of the Wasatch County Recreation Center. “There is a free drive-in movie night with popcorn to kick off the fair on August 5th, and to wrap it up on August 8th, we’re throwing a tailgate concert and BBQ, followed by fireworks.” In between,…

Local Resident to Complete 300-Mile Run

Heber City’s ultra-runner Ben Light will be running a 300-mile fundraiser beginning on Monday, July 20, 2020. Light, along with fellow ultra-runners Michael McKnight and Dax Hock, created the route after runs have been canceled or postponed due to COVID concerns. The new route connects the two Utah ultra-marathons through miles of Bear River and Wasatch mountain land. The trio has named the new route the “Utah BRAWL 300,” as an acronym for “Bear River and Wasatch Linkup.” The journey will begin near Bear Lake at Fish…

Heber Market 2020 Begins Thursday

Thanks to some very dedicated leaders of Heber City, the Heber Market on Main will be going forward this year! The kickoff event will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2020, from 6-8:30 pm, at the Main Street Park. It will include food trucks, live music, contests, and prizes. And, exclusively for 2020, there will also be physical distancing, sanitizing, and a face mask contest thrown in. After the event came to a close last year, the city decided to recreate it into a world-class event, with a new website and a new brand.…

Midway to Host 4th of July Celebration

The Midway Boosters are holding an Independence Day celebration on July 4, 2020, and everyone is invited! Activities will include a drive-by parade, a radio broadcast, and fireworks originating from Memorial Hill. The City of Midway is encouraging people to watch the fireworks from their vehicles, if possible. Booster members Randy Bradley and his wife Annie are in charge of the event. They knew they couldn’t have the traditional Midway celebration because of the coronavirus. “We came up with a plan where we wouldn’t have…

The Classics Come to Heber

Heber City hosted a popular Car Show on Saturday, June 27, 2020. The “Back to the 50’s” Car Show was held at Heber City Park and included music and awards. JC Hackett, radio personality for Oldies station KCPX, was the organizer, and this is his 27th year hosting the Heber City show. The proceeds from the show will go to charities, including The Alzheimer’s Foundation and the Utah 1033 Foundation for families of Fallen Law Enforcement Officers. Some accommodations were made due to the current COVID pandemic. For example,…

Utah Lt. Governor Spencer Cox Visits Wasatch County

The lieutenant governor and GOP gubernatorial candidate Spencer Cox, along with his running mate Utah Senator Deidre Henderson, stopped by the Spin Cafe in Heber City on Wednesday to meet with local residents. The event provided an opportunity for Cox and Henderson to discuss issues important to Wasatch County. Cox also visited the Kohler Dairy Farm earlier in the day. A native of rural Fairview, Utah, Cox has made it a goal to visit each of Utah’s 248 cities and towns during his campaign for governor. He currently…

Red Light, Green Light, GO!

One of the city’s busiest intersections is becoming much safer. A new traffic light is being added to 100 South and 300 West. This road is also State Highway 113 and is managed by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The department has been doing a “warrant study” to determine if there was a need in that location, and their analysis showed that the stoplight was necessary to maintain the safety of the road. UDOT is also adding left-turn lanes on 100 South and crosswalks in all four directions. “These added safety…

A Colorful Display Of Heber City Unity

Heber City has officially put out its welcome mat for the summer! This past Saturday, the Community Alliance for Main Street (CAMS) organized its Heber City Annual Spring Planting. CAMS has made its mission to “restore and improve our beloved historic Main Street.” The non-profit is required to work with the significant limitations of being on a state highway, but Main Street is still the face of Heber City to visitors, and CAMS is working towards supporting local businesses and Heber’s economy by creating a unique and…

The Provo River

By Karyn Bates Anderson “A river is more than an amenity; it is a treasure. It offers a necessity of life that must be rationed among those who have power over it.” A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT This statement by Oliver Wendall Holmes Jr. (Former Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court) is as true today as it was in 1922. Of all the majestic landforms in the Heber Valley the Provo River, flowing silently along, yet changing everything in its path, is a significant game-changer. The river is a consistent and necessary…

Heber Market on Main

By Loralie Pearce When was the last time you invited your friends to meet you in aisle 10 of your neighborhood grocery store for a chat? Wait — don’t answer that. Instead, imagine yourself meandering through a beautiful open air space bursting with local art, crafts, agricultural goods, food, music, and if you’re lucky, a giant bounce house. Welcome to the all-new Heber Market on Main! In 1998 Heber City wanted to create a fun farmers market where the community could support each other through buying and selling locally…

Süss Cookies

By Rebecca Tibbits My dad always said he never met a cookie he didn’t like, and I’ve also inherited this gene. I’ve recently committed to the fact that cookies are my favorite food. I kid you not when I say I’m a bit of a cookie connoisseur, and I’ve been on the quest for the Most Delicious Cookie in the World. There are some definite runner-ups, but Süss Cookie Co. in Midway really takes the cake….er, the cookie. Jess Larson, owner of Süss Cookies, baked cookies out of her house with a cottage license and her mom’s…

Social Distancing, Stay at Home, Quarantine

By Cassidy Duhadway, LCSW One of the most important things for humans is connection. Belonging to a group and being connected to them helps us live longer, be healthier, and have more happiness. Being told to separate ourselves from others can cause harm to our physical and mental wellbeing, as individuals and as a society. It goes against our instincts and desires. It can breed loneliness and fear of other people. Some of the physical and psychological effects of social distancing may include: Feelings of loneliness,…

Reframing Negative Thoughts

By Lauren Hansen, LCMHC The last month has been hard. Really hard. My life, as I have known it, has been flipped upside down. My children no longer go to school, my husband no longer goes to work, I am trying to figure out online learning platforms, we are all inside of our home 24 hours a day; I feel like I’m in a pressure cooker. If I allowed my emotions to rule, I would be a complete wreck. When I step back and take a deep breath, I can recognize how grateful I am — even when the future seems uncertain. Not everything…

Turn the Page

By Stacey Burton In the last few months, life as we have known it has dramatically changed, but thankfully there are still great options for our kids when it comes to summer reading programs and incentives. It’s true that some restrictions remain in place, but we can rest assured that curling up with a good book will never be against the rules. We still have the power to travel to far-away lands, have great adventures, and expand our knowledge on various topics. Here are some resources to get kids excited about summer…

Power in Positivity

By Ryan Bunnell Publisher, Heber Valley Life Magazine “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself in your way of thinking.” - Marcus Aurelius - ANXIETY. It is safe to say that every single one of us has processed this feeling in the past several months. This edition of Heber Valley Life magazine has been written and assembled in the middle of the Wasatch County ‘Stay at Home’ order for the COVID-19 pandemic. The continued and now amplified disruption of ‘normal’ to the Heber Valley has…

Hometown Heroes

By Amanda Blazzard With the words, “Send the kids’ iPads and chargers home with them today. Just in case.” spoken calmly by my principle, I knew something was wrong — very wrong — we don’t just send iPads home with our Kindergarten students. Little did I know how current events were about to rock everyone’s world. A WORLD CHANGED FOREVER The week of March 9, 2020 was one for the records. We began with the time change messing with our sleep cycles, by mid-week the population was wolfishly hoarding toilet paper under a…

Casperville Road Museum

By Noni Henderson Driving along Casperville Road, you may notice the eye-catching memorabilia on display and wonder what exactly you are seeing. On this back road is a unique treasure trove of antiques, each with a story full of memories, history, and knowledge of our incredible valley, you likely won’t find anywhere else. It was a gusty, freezing spring morning when I stopped at John Besendorfer’s Casperville Road Museum, as he calls it. I had dressed warmly, knowing that once we started the tour, there would be so much…

Wasatch County Fair

The arrival of hundreds of glimmering horse trailers and clanking trucks precariously carrying carnival rides, combined with the sweet-sticky-hot-oil smell of cotton candy and deep-fried food, and the cacophony of livestock being herded into pens at the fairgrounds can only signal one thing: the Wasatch County Fair. By Lindsay Clyde-Flanagan Heber Valley’s first fair-like event took place in July 1860 as a celebration held to honor the arrival of the early Mormon Pioneers in 1847 to the Salt Lake Valley. Festivals…

Heber City Council Completes Sorenson Annexation

Heber City Council approved the annexation of the Sorenson Property, meaning the incoming 5,700-unit development built over the course of 40 years will officially be a part of the city. The 5,700-unit development is located on 8,000 acres to the north of current Heber City development. The annexation agreement has placed the development on 3,000 acres of the land leaving the remaining 5,000 acres as natural open space. The property was originally granted entitlements to build by a previous Wasatch County Council, without…

Wasatch County Moves To Low Risk Yellow Phase

Wasatch County has been moved to the low risk, yellow phase effective immediately. Thursday evening Wasatch County Health Department announced the county has been moved from the orange moderate risk phase to the yellow low risk phase. Wasatch County stayed in the yellow phase six days longer than most of the state. Wasatch County Health Director Randall Probst explained Wednesday the decision was made by the governor’s office based on monitored data of the virus. At the Wednesday meeting Probst says most businesses will…

The Day the Earth Stood Still

On Thursday, March 12th, 2020, the sports teams stopped, and the universities closed. The theatres canceled performances, and the churches canceled services. On Friday the 13th, the schools were dismissed. On Saturday, the resorts shut down. On Monday, the restaurants were required to suspend all dine-in services. They told us not to go to the movies. Don't take your kids to the park. Gather in groups less than 100, less than 50, less than 10. One by one, businesses limited their hours, closed their doors, and we were all…

Breaking The Mold

I have heard it popularly stated that by small and simple things – great things could be accomplished. Spring is a season where I feel this principle is illustrated quite clearly in nature. Consider the example of a small and seemingly insignificant seed, perhaps even invisible to the eye, that has been lying dormant under a blanket of organic cover and snow since autumn. As the snow melts and the temperature increases, that seed begins to germinate and comes to life. Within a relatively short window, that seed grows into a…

Heber Valley Railroad

The giants of Heber Valley Railroad were sleeping the day I visited them. Standing in majesty, quietly waiting for another day when the crowds would throng to join them on the platform. Grand engines and breathtaking cars rested silently in the yard as soft snow settled around them. Mount Timpanogos stood like a sentinel on the west, smiling down gently on the railroad yard, a friend of many years. In the calm, I imagine the distant echoing of times past and future; excited crowds awaiting their turn to present their ticket…

Dark Skies

Heber Valley – it’s not only a breath of fresh air but also a growing city where one can still see trillions of stars. In our heavenly mountains, views are priceless. Most of them require the sunlight to see: the Wasatch Mountains, Deer Creek, and acre after acre of open pastures. What happens when the sun sets? Then what view draws our gaze? When were the Big Dipper and the Milky Way discussed as treasured views from the valley floor? I can step out onto my lawn in central Heber and look up to see both of these on cold,…

Bringing Home Gold

What do Olympic ski jumping and craft beer have in common? The answer sits behind an inspired menu, wood grain bar, and shiny taproom at the new Heber Valley Brewing Company. Ski Jumping, Coaching, And Big Ideas Owners Greg Poirier and Clint Jones enjoyed a speedy, high-flying life before making beer their primary focus. Poirier moved out west in the 1980s to start coaching ski jumping and cross country skiing. 2002 found Poirier living in Utah while he coached athletes for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. His coaching…

The Social Experiment

Most local foodies are already familiar with Main Street Social’s beautiful patio — a charming, shady oasis to enjoy in summer for fantastic food, crafty libations, and live music. Talented restaurant team: Ashley and Vanessa Chapman, and Erik Zabriskie have been innovative and conscientious in running a quality dining experience in the historic brick building in the heart of Heber. With the restaurant’s success quickly snowballing past the original vision, Main Street Social recently decided to rethink the dining experience…

Creative Cuisine

Heber Valley’s dining scene has evolved over the years from fast-food chains dominating the market to becoming a culinary destination with over 30 unique restaurants found only here. To become a food destination in the restaurant industry, chefs and owners know they have to stand out. Being creative, preparing quality food, offering a consistent experience, and creating an atmosphere where people want to be is more important than ever in this competitive field. There are many ways to be creative in the restaurant world.…

Self Care Is Not Selfish

As a mental health therapist, it has been part of my education, training, and work, to encourage self-care. Taking care of oneself can be such an abstract idea and isn’t as black and white as other things. What defines self-care? I believe that varies individual to individual. If I could define self-care, it would be anything that fills you, gives you perspective to see things more clearly, and gives you the space to re-engage in your every-day responsibilities. When I meet with clients, by in large, the most important…

Fyzical Therapy And Balance Center At The Fit Stop

Mixing business and family can be a delicate balance. For physical therapists, Alan, Tyler, and Tobin Bluth, balance is their business. The father and two sons own The Fit Stop together: a unique physical therapy clinic and gym combination focused on the wellness of the whole individual, no matter their stage of life. “We’ve seen babies with torticollis, kids with broken arms, sports injuries, and hip replacements — the whole spectrum of ages. The Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center (spelled different because we are…

The Homestead

In a small little area of the world, over 10,000 years ago, snow melted in the Wasatch Mountains running through cracks and fissures in the ground until it reached 2 miles under the surface. It then began to heat and rise back up, bringing minerals with it. Eventually, that process created what is now known as the Homestead Crater. Midways Natural Wonder The Homestead is one of the most unique properties in Utah and has received well-deserved attention for over 125 years. Maria and Simon Schneitter originally built…

SPACEDØUT

A little over one year ago, three students from Wasatch high school assembled after a local talent show to play music together, and instant chemistry was born. Not just musically, but personally, as the boys immediately became great friends. Hien Maeda (vocals and guitar) 18, Joseph Nielson (bass) 18, and Coleman Atkinson (drums) 18, make up the three-member band called SPACEDØUT. They are passionate about what they do and have been honored to be able to show Heber Valley what they have to offer the music community. Their…

Wasatch High US Air Force JROTC

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) at Wasatch High School is just as exciting. With no obligation for military service, this unique academic program prepares students for college, careers, and any future endeavors. Its focus is specialized and comprehensive-unlike any other elective. The AFJROTC program encompasses academics, leadership, physical…

Ventum Racing

What is it about Wasatch County that is so attractive to residents and visitors from around the world? Perhaps the 2002 Winter Olympic Games played a role in introducing the Heber Valley to the world, or maybe three beautiful state parks have helped brand the area. Nobody could blame a person for wanting to visit here, and if the past dozen years have proved anything, people clearly want to live here. After all, the Heber Valley is located less than an hour from the Salt Lake City International Airport, and just a quick,…

It’s been over a decade since Travis was thrown from his four-wheeler after hitting a car. Doctors said he wouldn’t be able to walk again. Today he has three beautiful children: Haigen, Tate and Charlie and walks assisted by a brace. A brace deemed unnecessary by insurance. “We fought insurance for three years. We were told the braces were not medically necessary and just a…

Valoy Eaton

Sunlight softly filters through the branches of a mulberry tree, creating mesmerizing shapes of light and shadow. A young Valoy Eaton stands below the tree captivated by all he sees. Now, at age 82, that fascination with light, shapes, and shadows continues to be an integral part of him. He says that when it comes to being an artist, “The seeing is really important.” His ability to see and appreciate his surroundings, along with good old-fashioned hard work, has earned him his livelihood and a 50-year career as an artist.…

Fort Heber

If you’ve ever driven around the northwestern end of Heber, you may have noticed several sandstone markers displayed at the corners of 100 West 500 North, 100 West 100 North, 300 West 500 North, and 300 West 100 North, that mark the location of Fort Heber. Perhaps in your hustle to Smith’s Marketplace, you’ve wondered at the monument in front of the store. Whether you’re a long time resident or a newcomer, you’ve probably read the brief summaries of Heber’s history. As usual, there is always more to the story once you look…

Heber Half

The Heber Half Run for Autism is an event that brings the community together in love and support toward those who have autism or know someone with autism. Imagine Never Hearing Your Child Say, ‘I Love You.’ For Bryan’s mom, that was a real concern. Bryan wasn’t speaking and couldn’t maintain eye contact with others. After being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bryan began treatments with Kids On The Move’s Autism Center. Now, Bryan can point, use simple sign language, and even say a few words. Bryan’s first full…

Jared Rigby

What does “Toy Story,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Andy Griffith Show” have in common? Sheriffs. Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby is much better than a fictional character from a movie or old TV show. Guilty of incredible credentials, impeccable character, and indisputable concern and innovation, Jared just finished his first year as sheriff. An Open Case The sheriff’s rigorous responsibilities include; Correction and Court Security, including the jail, civil papers, the 911 Center, Search and Rescue, Emergency Management,…

Grandma’s Traditions

When you think of the holidays, what makes them the most special to you? Is it family? Friends? Good food? For the Cocoa Bird, it is all three. For Coni Gleason — aka the Cocoa Bird — it’s grandma’s caramels, handmade chocolates and marshmallows that really make the holidays special. “Food is powerful,” she says. “It’s safe and warm.” “I remember as a child how special grandma would make the holidays,” Coni says with a twinkle in her eyes. She grew up in the kitchen, watching her grandmother make her famous candies and…

Melvin’s Public House

So, a female Cleveland Browns and Ohio State fan from Canton, Ohio, and a male Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State fan from Poughkeepsie, New York, meet in a Park City bar. What could go wrong? Well, as it turned out, not much. Melissa (a.k.a. Mel or Melvin) and Mike went on to tie the knot and — after a long spell of gathering bona fides in the local food and beverage trade — opened a sports bar in Heber. When I first entered Melvin’s Public House in the sacred space at 139 N. Main Street that once housed Clyde’s…

Representing In A Big Way

There is no question that the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games has had a lasting impact on Utah residents. Was it the sense of pride in welcoming the world with open arms? Perhaps it was the unprecedented positive economic impact? Maybe it was the tears of joy and excitement we shared as our athletes won medal after medal. Or, maybe it was the little tug we felt in our hearts each time the national anthem played as our athletes stood in honor on the podium. In a recent conversation with Courtland Nelson,…

Redmond Life

By Andrew Berthrong Forget what you think you know about mining — of hunched figures hammering away in the dark danger of a narrow shaft, of the constant risk of cave-ins or the precious vein petering out, of the miners’ strong-set faces streaked with black dust, their tired eyes, of canaries in cages. Salt Mining, particularly at Redmond Life, is different in almost every way. This trend-bucking is something of a habit at Redmond Life. Its salt mine in Redmond, Utah, is not only a picture of cleanliness and safety…

Rocky Mountain Therapy Dogs

A brand new therapy dog organization is focusing on helping Wasatch County residents… one paw at a time. It should come as no surprise that your dog provides incredible benefits to your emotional and physical well-being. Did you know that dogs could impact your community in the exact same way? Rocky Mountain Therapy Dogs (RMTD) is embarking on its first year with certified teams volunteering their time to provide therapeutic and educational services to the Heber Valley. Through the power of tail wags and wet kisses,…

How Human Are You?

One of my all-time favorite science fiction stories centers around a dystopian future in the San Francisco of 2021. In Phillip K. Dick’s 1968 classic “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” Earth is suffering from the remnant radiation of a global nuclear war. All remaining life is cherished. Due to scarcity in the marketplace, possessing something like a house pet is prohibitively expensive while, at the same time, encouraged in a society that values life above all else. Thus, bending to the empathetic tendencies of…

Preserving The Outdoor Way Of Life

Opening the door to his newly-acquired commercial space at 350 S. Main Street on a cold February day in Heber, Jim looked around and whispered, “What am I going to do here?” Retracing family roots in the hope of creating a better connection to the outdoors, Jim Roach moved his family from Salt Lake City to Midway on New Year’s Day 2016. A characteristic widely shared in our community, Jim’s desire to connect with nature represents an outdoor way of life we all want to preserve in the Heber Valley. Likewise, he wanted…

An Old-Fashioned Christmas

There’s no place like home for the holidays and, according to Mayor Kelleen Potter, “One of the best ways to bring a community together is holiday celebrations.” An Old-Fashioned Christmas, which takes place between the Bank Block building and Heber’s City Center, is a time for the community to come together and — for a night at least — forget personal stresses, life’s worries and the valley’s growing pains. This cheerful community event is a way to remember what’s most important: each other. “Slow time down, sit…

A Look At Jordanelle Development

Change.  It’s a small word, yet for many the expression spikes our adrenaline and causes our hearts to beat quickly with fear or excitement. Whatever our personal response, this fact remains: nothing is meant to stay the same forever. As intelligent beings, we crave improvement and progression; we long for that something just out of reach and are willing to work hard for it  — even if it takes decades to achieve. For the past 162 years, the area we now call the Wasatch Back has been in a constant state of change.…

Sweet + Simple

I invite you to close your eyes for a moment and recall your favorite memories of the holidays from your childhood. Childhood has a wonderful way of reminding us that, as Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “It is the sweet, simple things in life which are the real ones after all.” I learned this important lesson firsthand from my own children when they were very young. At the end of each day as I tucked them into bed, I would ask them what the best part of their day had been. Over time, I started to notice distinct…

Thanks to Tom Whitaker

Words are so powerful. They make us laugh, cry and feel emotions so deeply they live with us forever. And cowboy poetry is just that — a collection of powerful words meant to make you feel all ranges of emotion. Whether it is through song, poems or prayers, the words you hear at a cowboy poetry gathering are ones you won’t soon forget. Our community is lucky to host one of nations top cowboy poetry festivals and this year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Heber Valley Western Music and Cowboy Poetry Gathering!

Meet McKardy Kelly

Sunday, July 21, 2019, is a day that McKardy Kelly says she will never forget. Riding into Midway atop a blaring fire truck, McKardy waved and smiled at family, friends and community members who lined the streets in her honor. The parade paid tribute to McKardy, who was named the National High School Rodeo Queen the day before in Rock Springs, Wyoming. McKardy — the first Utahn to win the title since 2008 — says she owes her success to her friends, family and the special place where she grew up. For McKardy,

Heber City Council

Heber City is the third-fastest growing micropolitan city in the nation. With that comes great pressure to grow responsibly and to stay focused on what makes this area so special. Numerous surveys completed in the last decade reflect the residents’ desires to keep our small-town feel, open fields, clean air, trails, recreation and quality of life we’ve all come to love. Eight candidates originally ran for the three open seats on the Heber City Council, but only six made it through the primary election held on

Light Speed

Written by Ben Light with contributing editor Julie Moulton You might know Ben Light from throwing down at 200-mile races; he completed the Triple Crown of 200s in 2017 and has paced, volunteered or ran all three races every year since their debut in the ultra-running scene six years ago. You might have heard about Ben tackling the Spine® Race, a brutal 268-mile winter ultra in the United Kingdom with a notoriously-low finisher rate. He was one of the first Americans to take on the race, and when the

Adam Posaki is Berspar

At just 17 years old, Adam Posacki honed Bergspar’s simple fashion and clean look. The burgeoning clothing company’s inspiration stems from Adam’s experience moving here four years ago, when the beauty of our valley struck him. However, beauty and vision do not start businesses — and Adam wanted to succeed. In 2018, Adam launched a new clothing brand that’s designed to represent the outdoor lifestyle of the Heber Valley. To help “light the flame and scale as fast as possible,” Adam participated in Wasatch High

Crossing the T’s with Ty and Ty

In the Heber Valley, “Crossing the T’s” has nothing to do with being meticulous, penmanship or naval warfare. Just as exciting as Michael Jordan’s 1995 NBA return or the 2004 World Series in which Boston broke the Curse of the Bambino, this Wasatch High original show has made a comeback to our local radio station KTMP. Wasatch Class of 2006 alumni Tyler Moss and Tyler Baird, now teachers and coaches, are the hosts of “Crossing the T’s with Ty & Ty,” a local radio show that spotlights Wasatch High School

Welcome to Tom’s Cabin

As you open the front door you are met with the intoxicating smell of old leather and the feeling you’ve stepped back in time. The vintage cowboy regalia is everywhere; it’s hard to take it all in at first. Your eyes jump from old photographs and antique saddles to vintage slot machines and timeworn spurs. You’ve probably driven past Tom’s Cabin at the foot of Memorial Hill in Midway many, many times. The old cabin looks like a prop from a Western movie, but inside is trove of real cowboy and Native American

Revitalizing Main Street

Real estate prices in the Heber Valley continue to climb like never before. Just before the great recession of 2007, home prices spiraled up until the housing market bubble burst — leaving many property owners scrambling to pay one or more mortgages on their portfolio of real estate assets. Since around 2010, real estate values have steadily increased until the point where property values are equal to and even greater than they were before the recession. A thriving real estate market in the Heber Valley presents both

A Fruitful Past

“It looks as though all nature was kind to me and that even the trees smiled.” – Johannes Huber One of the first orchards in the Heber Valley, the Huber Grove began as a 160-acre family homestead. Built by Swiss immigrant and one of Midway’s founding fathers Johannes Huber, the historic Huber house and creamery still stand today. Johannes and his wife Maria raised 10 children — five girls and five boys (including one who tragically died young) — in the single-story house located in what is now Wasatch

Charley Jenkins

These are the things that country musician and Heber Valley resident Charley Jenkins wants his music to convey. For Jenkins, creating this type of music had to come from a real place. Home. Jenkins grew up not too far from the Heber Valley in the small rural town of Roosevelt, Utah. Like most folks in his town, country living was just part of everyday life. His family ran a small cattle ranch. He wrestled and rodeoed in high school and just enjoyed the charm of living in a small town. When it comes to writing

Waddie Mitchell

What’s in a Name? When Shakespeare penned those words he was asking does a name really matter? For Bruce Douglas “Waddie” Mitchell, it’s a safe wager his answer is yes.  As a young buckaroo growing up on a remote ranch near Elko, Nevada, Bruce was his dad’s right-hand man. “The hired hands around the ranch always called me ‘Doug’s Little Waddie,’” he says. “They’d shout out, ‘Hey Little Waddie,’ and as I grew up it was still Little Waddie until all of a sudden it was just Waddie.” You can hear

Kids + Concussions

The fall season is an exciting time for parents and kids alike — but as a parent, you know that playing sports has some downsides for your kids. Namely, what are those hard hits doing to your child’s head and body? While you can easily see a broken bone or lacerated skin, brain injuries and concussions are harder to detect — especially among young kids who seem to bounce back from anything. The following are a few things every parent needs to know about concussions — and how to help protect your sport-loving kids’

What if Movement Was the Answer?

This is the story of my journey surviving breast cancer. I’m not going to go into the details of my surgeries and treatment — that’s for another time — but I am going to share with you how a serious illness and mindful movement led me to my passion. It’s why I’m still here... and why I believe mindful movement should be a part of everyone’s life. Getting diagnosed with breast cancer was never on my bucket list. There is nothing more heart-stopping than hearing those three little words: “you have cancer.” I

Let’s Break Bread Together

Flour. Water. Salt. Three simple, everyday ingredients that can be found in any home — but when combined in just the right portions and in just the right hands, magic can happen. Andrew Berthrong, the owner of Hawk & Sparrow in Midway, routinely makes magic at his organic artisan bakery. The ultimate goal for this masterful bread maker? “To make something that people want, to really care about the details.” The Road Less Traveled Andrew was working on his teaching certificate at Utah

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire…

Fall is here in our beautiful valley, and with the changing leaves come some pretty noticeable changes at Wildfire Smokehaus at the Zermatt Resort in Midway. Once mostly known for its finger-licking good wings, nachos and casual cowboy atmosphere, Wildfire is ready to be known for living up to the “smoke” in Smokehaus. “I’ve tried BBQ all over Utah and we are striving to be the best,” asserts Sam Phelan, Wildfire’s new executive chef. Hickory smoke now permeates almost every entrée on the new menu. “I’m

7 Family-Friendly Fall Activities

There’s a lot to love about the Heber Valley in the fall. From cool, crisp mornings and stunning fall colors, to annual fall traditions that make our valley unique, here are seven fun activities your entire family will “fall” for. Heber Valley Railroad Pumpkin Train The “Heber Creeper” is a classic Heber Valley attraction. In the fall, be sure to take a ride on the annual Pumpkin Train, which includes a 40-minute train ride through the beautiful Heber Valley landscape, entertainment by costumed characters

Horse Country

“Stop. Watch. What is Custom saying to you when he flicks his ears like that?” My daughter Hadley listens to trainer Jeanie’s counsel, carefully analyzes the Quarter Horse Gelding’s body language and adjusts her actions. Custom hesitatingly approaches and once a mutual understanding of trust is reached, he closely follows her through a series of companionship interactions. Her slightest motion, he responds in perfect symmetry. It is synchronized dancing under the North Fields’ autumn sky.  Hadley has

The Taxonomy of an Identity

I love taking nature walks with my children in the Heber Valley and the fall season is arguably one of the most favorable climates in which to do so. Sometimes we walk the Provo River trails and other times we head for higher ground on any of the numerous and growing trail systems along the benches of the valley. As the children explore, we discuss the taxonomy or identity of the various life forms on the walk. The children drink it up. I attempt to point out the unique characteristics of each plant and insect with

Off-Grid Living: Disconnecting From The Beaten Path

Off-grid living. Those words often conjure up visions of people like Grizzly Adams, living off the land in a one-room log cabin with their bear bestie Ben, completely cut off from civilization. For some, that sounds like heaven — for others, not so much. The beauty of off-grid living is that it can look like whatever you want it to look like, from a tiny house deep in the woods to a dream home just off the beaten path — the sky’s the limit. Beards and bears are optional. Going “off-grid” simply means not being

Q&A Local Trends in Building and Architecture

It’s no secret that the Heber Valley is positioned for continued growth. Looking at the big picture, that growth may be in the hands of our planners and city and county officials, as well as zoning and influx. However, I wanted to learn from those on the ground — from the people who are literally building and designing our communities every day. To explore where we are heading with design and building trends in the valley, and to learn the inspirations and advice from those on the forefront of building our

Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum: Heber Valley History Resides in One of our Greatest Historic Buildings

How much of our future will be about preserving our past? With all the hustle and bustle that comes with a growing community, it’s easy to lose sight of what got us here in the first place. An old building is torn down to make way for something “bigger and better.” Historic homes are replaced with fancy new ones, and our attentions turn as quickly as the seasons change to the newest neighborhood or hot spot. Growth is a double-edged sword, but luckily, we live in a community with a dedication to preserving our past.

Welcome to Fran’s Roots and Wings

If you’re ever driving east on Center Street in Heber and notice the cutest aqua and white retro trailer and cheerful garden, be sure to stop by. Inside the refurbished vintage trailer named “Frankie” you’ll find the sweet and welcoming owner of Fran’s Roots and Wings ready to inspire you with beautiful flowers, homemade items and lively conversation. An unexpected career change brought Fran Naffziger and her husband Royce to the Heber Valley. Even though Fran was heartbroken to leave her Montana home of over 40

First Responders

We hear the stories of running into burning buildings while everyone else runs out, saving people from horrific crash scenes and dramatic rescues, but our first responders do so much more that goes unnoticed and underappreciated. Wasatch County Fire is doing everything they can to protect and keep our community safe. They host wildland fire and emergency management meetings, run mock disaster drills, conduct safety inspections and speak to countless groups that visit the firehouse. Many of their daily activities

Heber Valley Airport

I love Heber! I love the mountains, the clean air, the natural beauty, the night sky, the aspen trees, the beautiful lakes and the unlimited recreational opportunities located nearby. One other attribute that draws me in and distinguishes Heber’s quality of life, is its quiet, tranquil atmosphere. It’s hard to keep a good secret. Those who first discovered gold in the Sierra Foothills in the 1840s had hoped to keep it quiet, but the world quickly learned of the discovery and descended on the area in great numbers.

Stress-free School Prep:

Sure, school has barely ended, but preparing over the next few months for the upcoming school year can alleviate much of the stress that comes with sending the kiddos off on that big yellow bus on the first day back to school. Research has shown that, on average, a student’s achievement scores can decline during summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning, and that this decline is more pronounced at higher grade levels. Which means that summertime learning loss — also referred to as the “summer

The Sweet Taste Of Italy Right Here In The HV

When you first walk into the Spin Cafe on Main Street in Heber, you are immediately greeted by the beautiful gelato counter showcasing 12 freshly-prepared flavors just begging to tempt and tantalize your taste buds. Vincent Esposito is more than just an aficionado on the topic of gelato — he eats, sleeps and dreams gelato. He lived in Italy for over two years, traveled the Italian countryside extensively and has studied the art of gelato longer than most people spend thinking about food in a lifetime. “I

Farm Fresh

What do you do when everyone around you is closing down their operations and selling out to developers? You double down, reinvent yourself and carve out a niche that makes people crave what you have created. In this case, that niche was carved out of cheese and has fulfilled the goals and dreams of father and son farmers, Grant and Russ Kohler of Midway.   The Heber Valley once was home to 130 dairy farms — but today there are only two remaining farms in production. “Small dairy farmers needed to change how

Bringing California Ink To The HV

Dave Brewer is a tattoo artist from a different time. Listening to him talk about tattooing is like listening to any serious artist – he’s passionate about his craft and works hard to create in a way that honors its origins. For the Brewers, tattooing is a family business. Born in Whittier, Calif., Dave Brewer began tattooing in 1991, and in 1996, he opened Trigger Happy Tattoo in nearby La Habra. In those early days, Brewer took his young son, Dalton, to work with him every day after kindergarten. Dalton

Master Of Murals

At four years old, Skye Walker did something that would change the course of his life. He picked up a crayon and began coloring. He’s been coloring and creating ever since. In June 2018, Skye hit the road in his Sprinter Van — appropriately and cleverly named “Vango” — for a yearlong “Sea2Sea Mural Tour.” Ten months, 17,000 miles and 23 murals later, Skye Walker found himself in the Heber Valley. Skye wasn’t lost. Quite the contrary: the stars had aligned to get him here. One month before he left on his tour,

Susette Gertsch: Midway Artist, Teacher And Originator

You can tell a lot about a person from his or her front porch. A floral welcome mat makes you think of a cheery household inside. Loud barking keeps you away from the porch altogether! But an eclectic covered porch with a casual arrangement that includes a child’s chair complete with a ragdoll, a grouping of apples in a tin pail and a little hide-away house that’s now home to a stray cat, you know this is the home of an artist. Susette Gertsch, of the truck seen on Homestead Drive which has the sign

Clean Air – What Is It Worth?

Why do we live in the Heber Valley? Why do people come here? Is it only for our incredible mountains with their scenic views and our beautiful fields? Is it for the people — our great neighbors, family and friends? Is it to enjoy our wonderful events, the parks, trails, reservoirs or HVRR? Is it only for the peace and quiet, our privacy and relative lack of traffic — especially off of Heber City’s Main Street? What is one the common thread about everything we love in this valley? Think about this: Could it be

Make A Splash On The Reservoir This Summer

I remember being little and sitting on the mesh trampoline between the two hulls of my older brother’s catamaran. Looking out onto the rippled water of Deer Creek Reservoir, it was an experience I could not appreciate as I do now. Above me was the mainsail, full of wind. We were moving swiftly across the water. With me were my nephews; it was their father who was at the helm. We all had crew duties — on a sailing vessel everyone is employed and there are no idle hands. From time to time, I see others sailing on Deer

Patriot Camp

pa-tri-ot (noun) a person who passionately supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors. A Summertime Tradition Summertime is a kid’s paradise filled with popsicles, picnics, flip flops, fireworks, barbeques, ballgames and vacations. For many Utah families, Patriot Camp has been added to that iconic summertime list. Patriot Camp was started in Pennsylvania by a group of ambitious moms who wanted to teach their children more about our country’s founding and freedoms.

How To Keep Your Diet On-Track When Your Kids Are Off-track

As a personal trainer, I witness a pattern every year. The holidays come and go, and with all of the parties and delicious treats comes the inevitable weight gain. January rolls around, and contrary to popular belief, most people don’t act right away on their New Year’s resolution to lose weight — probably because they are still trying to recover, both emotionally and financially, from the madness. Oh sure, there are the rare few who hit the ground running, but in my experience, the fitness rush doesn’t start

Active Transportation

(n): a form of transportation of people and sometimes goods that only uses the physical activity of the human being for the locomotion. I laid the question down for my friend Eric. “What was it like riding your bike everywhere for a year and a half around Heber?” “I got super fit!” he answered with a grin. “I would ride to work, then grab some groceries, and after dropping the groceries at the house, go mountain biking at Coyote Canyon.” Eric more or less set the bar for getting around by bicycle. He

Living Sculpture

One of my personal hobbies is styling and tending to bonsai trees. The overall goal behind the art of bonsai is to create a portable window into nature in the form of a potted tree. That tree, in miniature, should illustrate all of the characteristics of an ancient and venerated monument of endurance and survival as it may be found on the mountain itself. The discipline involves, initially, creating a design or a plan generated from careful observation of the natural characteristics of the tree. A good design will

Tread Lightly

The transition from winter dormancy to tender spring awakenings has a soft spot in my heart. Our mountain desert environment is so harsh, and yet the most delicate and intricate flora and fauna have somehow become specialized enough to survive our seasonal transitions. The annual rebirth is a miracle in my eyes. When those frail and dainty, newly-emerged little shoots start to stick their heads out from the left-over blanket of expired vegetation of seasons past, I cannot help but think about their – albeit

Heber Valley Choir + Orchestra

The Hills And Valley Are Alive With Music There is a certain excitement before a concert begins. It starts with the rustle of chairs being moved. Next comes the trill of an oboe; soon followed by some strings and a final flourish of the timpani. The lights dim, maestro Heather Thaxton arrives, and a baton is raised. For a brief moment there is quiet anticipation… nothing but anticipation. Suddenly, the magic begins. Heber Valley Choir and Orchestra has been making magic with their music in the valley since

Celeste Johnson

What an exciting time to be a mayor in this valley! Depending on which study you look at, Wasatch County is in first or second place for the fastest-growing county in its demographic in the country. That’s staggering! Last fall, Wasatch County residents passed a $10 million open space bond and Midway residents passed a $5 million open space bond. So, while we are growing with more residential and commercial developments, the residents of this county have made it clear that they would also like to preserve

Cool Teachers Care

“Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives.”  – Andy Rooney Without question, teachers impact more individual lives than nearly any other profession. And while the Kati Fischer Teacher of the Year program is currently flourishing in each school, Wasatch County School District, along with Labrum Chevrolet, Buick and Ford, conceived of an additional way to thank the lifeblood of the district and launched Cool

Heber City General Plan

Looking To The Past To Prepare For The Future As Warren Buffett once stated, “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone else planted a tree a long time ago.” For more than a century, Heber City leaders have created a myriad of plans to address various community issues. Some of these plans hit the mark and created the  proverbial shade that so many people presently enjoy. Other, less-than-perfect plans lacked the foresight to address many of the challenges of today. The Need For An Updated Plan

Kole Wright Memorial Foundation

Created to honor and carry on Kole Wright’s legacy of caring for others, the Kole Wright Memorial Foundation is empowering the youth of Wasatch County to believe in their own potential through connection, mentorship and self-discovery. Kole was 36-years-old when he tragically took his own life on August 12, 2018. Incredibly saddened but deeply motivated by this loss, Terra and Chase Wright have turned his passing into a new beginning for those in our community who need it most. The Wrights believe that young

Christine Chappell: Sewing Something to Smile About

Christine Chappell has turned an ordinary fiberglass gas station mascot into a corner craze. Heber’s herbivore, aptly named Octane, delights young and old with each wardrobe change. From seasonal to promotional outfits, this talented and creative seamstress has brought many smiles and laughs to residents’ routine drive-bys and visitors passing through. The owner of Mountainland One Stop, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed, placed the Sinclair green dinosaur on the corner of his lot at the prominent intersection of 1200 South and

Once Upon a Story Time With Miss Sally

The Wasatch County Library claims fame to the one and only Miss Sally, the children’s librarian and program director with an enormous passion and love for literacy and children. And when those things come to together, something extraordinary happens. “Literature is magical,” says Sally Baird. She moved to Heber in 2005 and her first visit to the library just happened to be the building’s one-year anniversary. She inquired about story time and was told it was done by moms who volunteered once a week. Kristen Bowcutt,

Abram Hatch: a Historic Heber Home

1892 – Present One of the most beautiful historic buildings in Wasatch County is located at 81 East Center Street in Heber. Over the decades, it has been a private residence, a bank and a real estate sales office. The building’s official name is the Abram Hatch House; however, most local residents remember it as the old Zions Bank building. Abram Hatch was a local businessman and farmer who also served in various leadership positions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. From 1864 to 1867 Hatch

Creating A Sense Of Home

At first glance, interior design might seem superficial and fairly unimportant, but the truth is that we are all deep into the design process on some level. Not only is our living space a functional artistic expression, it’s also our default inspiration board for life. We interact with our homes on a daily basis. They influence our alignment, our mood and our aspirations. As we are learning more and more just how affected we are by the energy of our mental and emotional environment, it’s easy to forget that

Art Among Us

The Heber Valley is home to many artists and art displays where residents and visitors alike are privileged to view beautiful creations on a daily basis.  Our local statues are among the striking art we take for granted in the valley, as they are almost too easily overlooked in public places. A careful scan of our lovely community, however, will uncover some of these amazing pieces of art — and reveal the history they portray and the stories of how they came to be. 1. The Blue Boar The first bronze

Yoga Therapy

The Studio Owner and Instructor Kasey Sorensen says to take 10 deep breaths and “when you inhale, go past your chest, into your belly. On the inhale, listen to the noise in your mind and let go on each exhale. On every breath visualize the words leaving your body. By the tenth breath let the noise leave your body and make space for a new story.” If you took the time to follow Sorensen’s instruction, you might just feel a little more focused, a little more relaxed, a little more open. Per Sorensen, “You’ve now done a

Setting Goals and Sticking to Them

We are months into 2019 and chances are you’ve already abandoned at least one of your New Year’s resolutions. Or maybe you didn’t even set any because you are tired of failing year after year. The reason most of us don’t reach our goals is because we set ourselves up for failure from the beginning. I was no different. Every year I made it a goal to finally lose the extra weight I was carrying. I would start out strong, working hard at the gym, eating healthier, drinking lots of water. Inevitably, a few weeks or even

Local Farmer Gets Back to His Roots

Fresh, crisp and all-natural produce is just around the corner for Chris Pyper at Rustling Aspen Farm in Midway. With just a third of an acre, an unwavering drive and a love of his community, Pyper has built one of the finest all-natural farms on the Wasatch Back.  Living in Kentucky and farming with his friend Annie for four years, Pyper couldn’t imagine setting down roots so far from the Heber Valley. “I wanted to move home and grow for the community that I grew up in,” he said. After being gone from the valley

Backyard Beekeeping in the Beehive State

When you think of beekeeping, you probably think of bees that produce that sweet golden elixir we all know and love called honey. However, did you know that there is a large population of native bees — ones that don’t make honey — living naturally in the Heber Valley? That’s right: Utah is home to the largest concentrations and the most types of native bees in the nation! “I saw a hive in someone’s backyard,” says Susie Goodspeed. “I was fascinated and hooked.” Goodspeed is the owner of Susie Bee Good Honey

Gear: Ready to Go When You Are

I pulled out my water filter, started pumping, and realized no water was filling my bottle. Somehow, it was just moving air! Turns out, the filter cartridge had cracked. I was now stuck deep in the Wasatch Range with no water. What we do outside is not about the gear. Admittedly, though, gear can make or break an outing. If you left your bike pump in the garage and are already at the trailhead with under-inflated tires, it might leave you scrambling for a way to salvage the ride. If you hiked six miles down Uinta’s

Heber Valley’s Greatest High-Flying Adventure

“You’re doing what?” my incredulous sister-in-law exclaimed when I told her I was going to fly in a North American T-6 Texan. “Is this part of a crazy bucket list?” “Not really. It just sounds like fun,” I responded but I soon learned that flying in one of the most iconic aircrafts in U.S. military history is the bucket list item I never knew I had. The Golden Age of aviation is alive and well at the Heber Valley Airport, thanks to the Utah Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Museum, dedicated to the

Beyond The Bypass

Roads create the patterns of our lives. We drive, ride and even walk them daily. Transportation is an essential part of any community and it’s time to take a second look at the roads in the Heber Valley. There has been much discussion of a Highway 40 bypass. Do we need it? Where should it go? How will it impact businesses on Main Street? How will it impact property owners in the proposed areas? As it stands, congestion on Main Street is already pushing more and more traffic onto our residential streets, endangering our…

Message From The Mayor

People often ask me if I enjoy being mayor and my response is absolutely! Being mayor is one of the best jobs in America. It is exciting and very rewarding. No two days are the same and I am honored to be able to meet and work with many amazing people who care deeply about the success of Heber City. Our municipal government has three main functions: to provide services, to pass ordinances and to create a sense of place. As for that sense of place, cities have different things that make them unique and give residents a…

WHS Food Pantry Nourishes Students

Nearly 15 percent of children in Wasatch County are food insecure, according to Feeding America. In hard numbers, that’s 1,350 kids under the age of 18 – 52 percent of whom are estimated to be ineligible for federal nutrition assistance. To help curb that troubling statistic, Wasatch High School decided to try to make a tangible difference for the underserved in our community. This year, WHS launched its Community of Caring class in which the students’ main prerogative is to manage the WHS Food Pantry. The pantry,…

Building Bridges of Unity

Since its establishment in 1862, Wasatch County has been recognized as a community that builds bridges. Some of these bridges include well-engineered structures that enable people to cross the Provo River at various locations. Other bridges, however, are built on a foundation of support, honorable relationships and understanding. In a period of unprecedented population growth, the challenges that Wasatch County faces have never been greater. Similarly, the need for building bridges of unity is at an all-time high.…

Wigglish

Whether you say “Wigg-lish” or “Wiggle-ish,” there’s no denying that Wigglish is a different kind of toy store. It is, in fact, Heber Valley’s only specialty toy store. Amy Schulthess learned about the wide world of imaginative and creative play while living in Paris, France, with her husband and two young children. After moving to the Heber Valley with her family, she saw the need for a great toy store in the area. So, she put her knowledge and love of special and unique toys to work. Quickly thereafter, Wigglish toy…

Winter Warrior

Greg Tayler, MD, a family practice physician at Heber Valley Hospital, is no stranger to endurance sports. As a student at East High in the 80s, he was a gifted cross-country and track athlete — but all that changed when he landed a job at Guthrie Bicycles in Salt Lake City and traded his track spikes for bike spokes. Guthrie Bicycles sponsored the 1983 East Canyon Triathlon and encouraged its employees to participate. At the time, triathlons weren’t as well-known as they are today — it was a burgeoning sport that…

Winter Blues

Are you SAD? You’re not alone. Seasonal Affective Disorder is more common than you may think. In the winter months, is it more difficult to get out of bed? Do you have less energy or motivation? Do you experience a decreased mood, have difficulty sleeping or struggle to concentrate? Do you feel agitated, lose interest in the things you typically enjoy or feel like you want to crawl into your bed for the entirety of winter? If so, you may struggle with SAD. Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that…

The Bagel Den

A new dining option in Heber now delivers the flavors of New York to the valley. The Bagel Den opened its doors this past September and has been slinging NY bagels by the dozen ever since. The vibe when first walking into Heber’s new eatery is warm and inviting, with reclaimed pallet lumber on the walls and a beautiful four-sided LED fireplace featured in the center of the dining room. “I wanted to create a place that was bright and open for people to come and enjoy,” explains Matt Johnston, owner of The Bagel Den.…

The Old Goat

What do you get when you combine a lifelong passion for cooking, hot sauce and a goat named Clover? You get Heber’s newest neighborhood eatery, The Old Goat! Ryan and April Estel opened their doors this November and they couldn’t be more excited to bring their vision and culinary flair to the Heber Valley. “I am not reinventing the wheel,” says Ryan. “I just love to get creative with what I am given.” This creativity is evidenced by his incredible menu. Ryan manages to pack more flavor and options into a simple menu…

Know Before You Snow

Safe backcountry skiing starts with weeks of weather watching. I follow the wind and the moving snow. I watch the mountain weather stations to understand what is happening where I like to ski. I take note of the observations, forecasts and advisories offered by the Utah Avalanche Center. I make my plan only after I have determined where I can ski safely. It snowed last night. The sun is coming up and I’m high above the Heber Valley. I’m with my ski buddies, out for a backcountry ski tour. We’re on alert for avalanches…

Winning at Winter

Slipping down the Soldier Hollow tubing hill at an ever-faster speed, I couldn’t help but giggle. I had never sat in a tube and gone so fast! Friends were hooting and hollering and the night was a riot. Like children drawn to birthday cake, we made our way back to the top for another serving. I made five laps that night, each its own brand of winter fun. While we live in a mecca for winter sports and activities, many of us aren’t “winter” people. For some, the thought of tearing up the backcountry on a pair of skis is as…

Layer Upon Layer Of Snow

One of my favorite life moments is to wake up on a cold, crisp winter morning only to find that a new, deep layer of snow is covering the existing landscape. I love to gaze upon an unblemished field of light, fluffy powder. I adore that fresh coating of pure white; clinging to the trees and softening the rocky summit line of our surrounding mountain landscape — only noticeable after the clouds break and the light returns with all of its blinding clarity. I delight in how the snow drifts and covers everything that I once

How One Olympian Gets Kids Excited to Hit the Slopes

PARK CITY, Utah, November 3, 2018 — With ski season around the corner, it’s time to dust off your boards and start daydreaming about an epic snow year. But as the snow starts to fly, how do you get the kids excited to head to the slopes too? Former Olympian and U.S. Ski Team member Libby Ludlow has it covered. With the launch of A-B-Skis, an alphabet book about the magical world of skiing, Ludlow is making it easier to share the stoke of skiing with your little ones. Designed to instill a lifelong love for skiing,…

The Pumpkin Man

Now in his tenth year of growing, Jamie Johnson is finishing up his second season in Midway and will compete in the 13th Annual Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-Off at  Thanksgiving Point on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018. His largest pumpkin to date? A 1,220-pound giant. One of his favorite memories is when he appeared on NBC’s comedy “The Marriage Ref” to defend his pumpkin obsession against his wife. Not only did he win the argument but Jerry Seinfeld serenaded him with a song he wrote, “The Pumpkin Man!” Jamie’s been…

History In The Making

The autumn landscape is a perpetual sequence of change. Within a slight glimmer of time the heat of the high desert summer passes, days grow shorter, the landscape itself explodes with a celebration of color and morphs into a preparatory state suitable for the endurance of the season to come. As we assembled this volume of Heber Valley Life magazine I have seen a likeness between the autumnal transition and the condition of the Heber Valley. The Heber Valley stands in its own transitional period. The acknowledgement of…

Snake Creek Grill: Locally Sourced

There is something to be said about a familiar place to eat. Friendly faces that greet you every time, consistently amazing quality of food and service, and not to mention the fresh aromas that delicately permeate the air as you walk past the kitchen. For many in the valley, this familiar place is Snake Creek Grill. When asked what his favorite thing about owning a restaurant is, Dean Hottle (who is also the head chef at Snake Creek Grill) replied, “I love working with and seeing my regulars, as well as new faces coming…

There’s Something Fishy Going On

In spite of previous efforts to manage the Jordanelle fishery, the stocked rainbow trout returns have been in a steady decline since 2004 and sit below the state averages in both creel and gillnet studies. The population of smallmouth bass is seemingly stable; however, these fish tend to experience an unexplained stunted growth rate after the age of two. The result of these two variables is that angler usage has decreased and citizens are not using this state-managed resource to its fullest potential. The Jordanelle…

Back to School + Good Nutrition

One of the challenges of modern life is knowing how to mix our busy lifestyles with healthy eating — especially once school starts. We try to make sure our children have a healthy meal before they rush out the door back to school on time, but more often than not, we’re lucky to get any breakfast into our kids, let alone make sure it’s healthy. And of course, on the way out the door they must also have a healthy lunch in their hands. The task of feeding our back-to-schoolers healthy, nutritious meals can be overwhelming —…

Branding In The Heber Valley

Livestock branding is an age-old technique that dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome, where brands were used to signify ownership. Europe adopted the practice during the Middle Ages and the technique was later imported to the Americas by Spanish cowboys. Creating A Brand Back in the day, ranchers would record brands in a book they carried in their pockets. As brands became more widely used, laws were passed requiring registration and inspection. Today, Utah ranchers can either design their own unique brand or choose one…

Capturing Fall

It’s officially fall and that means gorgeous colors are all over the Heber Valley! Here are some tips to capturing great photos of the spectacular colors this autumn. Location. Location. Location! With so many accessible places in the Heber Valley, here is a list of my favorite spots to photograph fall colors with super results. Up the road from Currant Creek (via Lake Creek) to Strawberry Reservoir there are a couple of patches of rare maverick red aspens. These vibrant red and orange aspens are right on the side of the…

Community Alliance For Main Street

In 2003 various business owners formed the Community Alliance for Main Street (CAMS) — an organization dedicated to enhancing Heber City’s most visible traffic corridor. The CAMS group established a non-profit organization and spent several years advocating for improvements to Heber’s Main Street. Among the many accomplishments of the original CAMS group is the investment made into street posts, garbage cans and benches. Additionally, the CAMS organization helped identify design standards for Main Street businesses. Due…

A Creative Triple Threat: Krazy Ani

Before Kristen Lloyd was Krazy Ani, she was Kristen Johnson — one of four siblings who wrangled their penchant for performance into a family wild west show in Georgetown, Idaho. Kristen and her sisters moved to Heber City in 2011 and the Heber Valley Railroad had a job opening that, in hindsight, seems like kismet. Kristen began working for the railroad as an actor. From the beginning, her character Krazy Ani provided a welcome diversion to train tours, shaking up passengers with a convincing yet all-in-good-fun train…

En Plein Air

If you happened to be in the Heber Valley June 29 – July 4 this year, you may have noticed scores of people scattered along the roadsides and perched in the middle of fields, gazing at easels with a pallet and brush in hand. As odd as this might have seemed, it’s a yearly occurrence. This summer marked the 13th year in which professional and amateur artists alike gathered in the Heber Valley to take advantage of the beautiful landscape and continue the age-old tradition of painting en plein air. The 2018 Wasatch Plein…

Wright-Tree Stadium

Wasatch High School’s football stadium, with its black and gold seats, elevated press boxes and entrance tunnel, is impressive — but not as impressive as the two men it is named for. Dan Wright and Ron Tree were two of the greatest teachers and coaches who have ever served and mentored the students and athletes of Wasatch County. A building usually showcases peoples’ names either because they’ve accomplished something memorable or they’ve contributed substantial amounts of money to its creation or renovation. In this…

Brent + Mary

As the Sons of the San Joaquin’s deep, rich baritones harmonized to “Shenandoah,” BYU’s Philharmonic Orchestra responded, their melodramatic violins rising up louder than ever, drawing out the night’s climax. The ocean of cowboy hats in the Wasatch High School auditorium was transmogrified to a place where western tunes met classical music, creating a musical movement through the combination of distinct traditions. And it was during that concert that Brent and Mary Kelly — with tears in their eyes — knew they were part of…

Summit Safety

In the beautiful Heber Valley, we have the good fortune of looking out the door and viewing some of the greatest mountains in our part of the state. Looking southwest, we can see the great Mount Timpanogos, named for a Ute princess who fell asleep on top of the range. Looking west up the Snake Creek drainage, we can see the white rocks that make up the backside of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. And to the east, we’ll find the behemoth mountains of the Uintas. Living in this idyllic valley of ours, we have all heard…

Heber City Theaters, August Business of the Month

Most people have a general understanding that the movie business is big business. With each new movie hitting the big screen reports come flooding in with box office performance numbers in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Even making a two-hour feature length movie can rack up several hundred million dollars.

Trail Running

Trail running is exactly what it sounds like: running on hiking trails. This endurance sport usually provides more elevation change and challenging terrain than your typical workout — especially compared to street or track running. Heber Valley resident Steve Frogley didn’t start out as a runner. “I didn’t run cross country, I didn’t run high school or college track. I hated running,” he says. It wasn’t until his late 20s when he decided to add cardio to his workout routine that he realized he actually enjoyed running.…

The Infamous Swiss Tacos

The Swiss tacos were born 71 years ago in Little Water, N. M. Or rather, Elva Henderson was. Her journey to Midway was far from ordinary. Raised by her Navajo grandparents, Elva spent her early childhood herding sheep on the reservation. In the ninth grade she followed her two younger sisters to what she calls an Indian boarding school in Ignacio, Colo.— a place where she was taught not only academics, but also the life skills required for life off the reservation. Her sisters returned home shortly after Elva arrived at the…

Smart Growth

Every morning I walk outside to fresh mountain air and fog resting on still water. I pass a field of cows grazing in a green pasture. I drive by Judith’s bookstore in Midway where I know her cat is sleeping by a fire. Every morning I roll down Midway’s Main Street and wonder what growth is to come. I grew up in the Bay Area and Austin, Texas, then spent transient years in both Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. I’m used to waiting in day-long lines at the DMV and driving for hours in traffic just to get downtown. The Heber…

Richard Bonner

Born and raised in Midway, Richard is one of the many local residents who carries the Bonner surname. Unlike the rest of the Bonner clan, Richard can stake claim to one other title: Wasatch High School’s first state wrestling champion. Today’s Heber Valley residents call the three red houses that don the corner of Main Street and 100 East in Midway “Racehorse Lane.” During Richard Bonner’s childhood, however, these buildings were simply “home.” From his time helping out on his Uncle Floyd’s farm as a child, Richard was no…

Quaint Beginnings Of Swiss Days

As the crowds have grown, Swiss Days has struggled to find balance between the spirit of community celebration and the reality of a world-class production. Some worry that the spirit of it has gotten lost somewhere along the way. Finding That Balance When asked whether the Swiss Days Executive Committee takes this balance into consideration, Chairman Randy Bradley responds, “All. The. Time.” “There are some people who would love to take it back, make it smaller, make it more simple,” he explains. But making it smaller…

Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood?

The seasonal transition from spring to summer in the mountains is a magical time. The deciduous landscape itself morphs from sterile dormancy to a vibrant, colorful and delightful palate of texture and color. The air is scented with the fragrance of blooming flowers, the dampness of the river bottom and the crisp cleanness that drapes our mountain summits. Children can be found playing in the streets, riding bicycles and celebrating the open-ended freedom of long summer days with limited obligations. Yardwork commences and…

Monday Midway Cruiser Cruise

If you happen to pass through Midway on a Monday evening, don’t be surprised if you encounter a swarm of locals of all ages happily buzzing through this bucolic, pastoral mountain village on their Midway Cruiser. Welcome to the Monday Midway Cruiser Cruise, a grassroots “slow ride” that began two summers ago with a few invites via text message and resulted in 40 enthusiasts gathering for a casual bike ride by the end of the day. Midway-based filmmaker Steve Olpin is evasive about the genesis of the Cruiser Cruise but…

Keep it Local

In the summer of 2015, the Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce created a new initiative called “Keep it Local.” The sole objective of the program is to strengthen our economy by promoting the concept of dining, shopping and playing local. To help further this cause, the Chamber decided to raise money through its annual golf tournament to invest into themed orange, green and blue street banners. During most summer days, these banners decorate Heber and Midway’s streets and remind residents to “Keep it Local.” While shopping…

Just Serve

If you’ve tried in the past to find service opportunities in the Heber Valley but were unsuccessful, you’re not alone. It’s not that there aren’t opportunities out there — historically they’ve just been hard to find. Now, thanks to JustServe.org and a group of Heber Valley residents, you’re just a few clicks away from serving your community. JustServe is a website that lists local service opportunities and helps make serving our communities easier. Anyone can go to the site, type in his or her zip code, and dozens of…

Jason Quinn

Raised in the Heber Valley, Jason Quinn is a 1991 graduate of Wasatch High School. His close connection to the valley doesn’t end there, as two of his murals still grace the walls of area schools. Quinn’s work expresses an optimistic and youthful style that is at once precise and unbridled. His mural at Rocky Mountain Middle School features a woodland scene filled with references from 50 beloved children’s stories. The 25-foot-wide, airbrush and acrylic piece took six months to paint after two years of conceptual…

Fly-By-Foodie: Back 40

Alright, it has to be said: the Back 40 patio has one of the most amazing views in the valley. I am seriously in love with this gem of a location. What once was a not so great, run down bar, is now one of the most popular places in town to get great eats and libations. The menu is fresh, up-to-date and loaded with something for everyone. I started with the Iceberg Wedge, which included cherry tomatoes, bacon, avocado, garlic croutons, a hard-boiled egg and blue cheese crumbles. I love a good wedge salad in the summertime:…

Dog Days of Summer

“Come By.” “Away To Me.” “That’ll Do.” Sound familiar? These are just a few of the commands sheepdog handlers often use while herding. Throughout history, wherever there have been sheep, mankind has used dogs to help corral them. Quick as a whip, smart enough to follow commands and gentle enough to not harm the sheep, these dogs have performed herding duties for centuries. As handlers spend countless hours training their dogs to precision, it’s only natural that they’d want show off all of that hard work. As early as the…

Bringing Home the Bacon

I’m often asked as a law enforcement officer, what was the worst call I have ever handled. I thought I’d take a few moments and tell you about my personal worst. This happened when I was fairly new on patrol in our area and was out looking to save the world one speeder at a time. Things were slow and I was essentially driving in circles when I heard dispatch send another officer on an animal problem. Apparently there was a pig in a resident’s yard that would not let her enter her house. Naturally, I couldn’t resist checking…

Mental Health: Breaking the Stigma

Have you ever talked with your hairdresser and then walked out thinking, “Wow, I told her way too much?” Believe me, you’re not alone — it happens all the time. As a mental health therapist, I often have people call me and say, “I don’t know what to do. My client/friend shared something with me and I don’t know how to help them! What do I say?”

Asked by Kids, Answered by Jill

We’ve all been there. You’re driving your oldest to soccer practice (10 minutes late because the shin guards were hidden in a basket of laundry), you’re stewing over a crunchy conversation you had with a coworker earlier that day and you just realized that you forgot to set out the frozen meat for dinner. Lost in your own little world, bouncing between thinking about the past and the future, you’re abruptly brought back to reality when one of your children asks, “Are you listening?”

A Vision Worth Protecting

Wasatch County is currently the fourth-fastest growing county in the nation. How will we protect our current rural feel, uninterrupted vistas and quality of life as we grow? Traffic, air and water quality, preserving historic agricultural lands and resisting suburban sprawl are high on the priority lists of many local residents.

From Lumber Barn To Elegant Office

The Heber Valley was built on the blood, sweat and tears of pioneers. The evidence of that hard work can be seen in the historic structures that dot its landscape today. These buildings give us a glimpse of what life was like before we got here and, if preserved, will continue to tie our future to our past.

Bank Block

My grandmother loved to tell stories about the “beautiful Heber Valley.” Many of her tales, however, centered around one landmark, the Bank Block building.

Nine Decades + Countless Heads

The morning air is frigid and the sun is barely spilling across the ground as Calvin Giles, Calvin’s friend, my husband and I pull on to Calvin’s plot of land in the North Fields. Calvin’s cattle hear the truck coming and make their way to greet us. It’s an early Saturday morning, and while most Heber Valley residents are still sleeping, Mr. Giles has been up for hours going through his morning routine — the same routine he’s had for nine decades.

A Helping Hand

At the Heber Food Pantry, it’s about more than just giving away free food. Bryce Hendley, the pantry’s leader, says the pantry is all about the “spirit of community giving and loving.” As the second largest food pantry run by Utah Community Action in the state, that’s a lot of giving and loving.

Asked by Kids

When I think of “bad things” I divide them into two categories. The first being natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. The second being stressful life events such as death, health issues or financial  struggles. If you are alive and breathing today, chances are you’ve been touched by at least one of  these things.

Scott Whitaker

While it is clear that Scott James Jewelry is a well-run business, there is no doubt that the man at the helm, Scott Whitaker, is first and foremost an artist.

Fly-By-Foodie: Spin Cafe

Spin Café is spinning with fun and flavor from its uniquely decorated walls to its savory food. The amusing metal artwork creates a playful atmosphere and the menu boasts “fresh scratch cooking with a spin.” My middle child was my special date for this review (now he can’t use the typical “middle child is always forgotten” claim), and we couldn’t wait to dig in. We had to start our dining experience with the gluten-free onion rings, as these giants have a serious reputation! Since gluten-free also typically means flavor…

Fly-By-Foodie: Tarahumara

Saturday night at Tarahumara brings a good crowd, fun atmosphere and live music to the Tequileria. While the Tequileria was busy when we arrived, there was no wait for a table on the restaurant side of the popular Mexican eatery. We were happy to find the space open, clean and inviting. Our server, Andrea, was friendly and prompt, kept our chip bowl full and gladly accommodated our custom-order requests. Our food was served promptly and we loved being able to choose from a variety of salsas and sauces at the salsa bar. I…

Belle’s Bakery

Kayleigh Morton first visited the Heber Valley in 2010 after completing the pastry program at Le Cordon Bleu. “We just fell in love with the area,” she says, expressing a sentiment shared by many in the Heber Valley.

Search And Rescue

The Wasatch Back is a beautiful place adorned with a plethora of activities and destinations for the outdoor adventurer. Whether you’re a seasoned local or a new visitor to the area, you are likely to find yourself drawn to recreate in these great outdoors.

A Fly Fisher’s Guide to Spring

If you’re waiting for warmer weather before you get out your pole and fly box, you’re missing out on some great fly fishing! Summer is popular for fishing because there are a lot of hatches and fishers can use bigger flies, but spring has several of its own great hatches, too. It’s also the first time of the year you can start catching fi sh on top of the water with a dry fly, rather than nymph fishing below the surface.

Extreme Skier Meets Cowboy

What do you get when an extreme skier partners up with a cowboy and his horse? It’s called skijoring. Never heard of it? Skijoring has actually been around for centuries. The Norweigan phrase translated means ski driving or driving with skis.

Tate Barn

The Tate Barn was restructured to stand as an iconic representation of the Heber Valley’s agricultural history as it was introduced to the world during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

The Future Of Healthcare In The Valley

In 1932, Dr. Robert McKnight, a Scotsman, served as the first doctor in Heber Valley. At that time, the closest hospital was in Salt Lake City and doctors visited their patients in their homes. While the healthcare landscape has changed, the highly personalized care of those early home visits hasn’t.

Still Striking 50 Years Later

As you walk into Holiday Lanes, it’s like you’ve stepped back in time. Peach, turquoise, and gold adorn the back wall above the 12 bowling lanes. Faux wood paneling surrounds the sound of falling pins. There are no flashing lights. No big screen televisions. No lounge chairs. Nothing glitzy about it. However most days, you’ll be greeted by Owner Phyllis Christensen.

Meet Greg Wilson

As a self-taught artist of both photograph and paint mediums, Greg Wilson presents a life-like style and precision to his work. Such an understanding could only come from spending countless hours observing and documenting rarely glimpsed animals in their natural habitats.

Derrick Boudwin

Derrick Boudwin was 18 when he was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which robs people of their eyesight. The doctor told him he would eventually have to deal with losing his vision, but he didn’t know it would completely change him. Music turned out to be the key to lifting his sadness.

Happy Trails to You

The most desirable communities found in the United States have one thing in common — trails. Heber City is no different. As the third fastest growing city in the United States for its size, the area offers an amazing 150 miles of trails to hikers, bikers, horseback riders, bird watchers and anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors. As people continue to move into the valley, the number of trails will increase as well. “As our population grows, there will be more trails; the trails will be more diversified and get more use,”…

Trail Etiquette

Prepare for all types of weather. Take plenty of water and sunscreen. BE CONSIDERATE Be courteous and yield to other trail users. When encountering equestrians, step to the downhill side of the trail. Avoid making sudden movements or loud noises. STAY ON THE TRAIL Stay on designated trails. Do not cut switchbacks.
