Dairy Keen Spotlighted by Zions Bank

This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

When speaking about Utah destinations, it doesn’t get more iconic than Dairy Keen – Home of the Train in Heber City. This local favorite has been around for 70 years and is known for their famous shakes, Train Burgers with ham and French fries.

Dairy Keen receives Best of State awards every year for their burgers, shakes and the extensive specialty menu of gluten-free items, with everything from gluten-free chicken strips to burgers and grilled cheese. Siblings Jan Olpin, Mike Mawhinney and Kim Houtz are bringing the business into the third generation of family ownership.

Their grandparents founded Dairy Keen in 60s. They had a motel they spent their life savings buying and when the Dairy Queen next door was going under, they bought it and created something new. It was revitalized and renamed in the 90s to put the trademark train that runs inside of the restaurant, in honor of the Heber Valley Railroad, and they just added a Harry Potter train that kids love.

Dairy Keen has over 100 employees, and Jan says they’re the best. Some have been with her for 15 years, and it’s not uncommon for kids to start as teenagers and come back during college.
